About the Author
Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are the two founders of SQLBI (http://www.sqlbi.com), where they regularly publish articles about Microsoft Power Pivot, DAX, and SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular. They both provide consultancy and mentoring on business intelligence (BI), with a particular specialization in the Microsoft technologies related to BI. They have written several books and papers about these topics, with a particular mention of “SQLBI methodology” (http://sql.bi/methodology), which is a complete methodology for designing and implementing the back end of a BI solution; and “The Many-to-Many Revolution” (http://sql.bi/m2m), which is a paper dedicated to modeling patterns using many-to-many dimension relationships in SQL Server Analysis Services and Power Pivot. Marco and Alberto are also regular speakers at major international conferences, such as TechEd, PASS Summit, SQLRally, and SQLBits.

Practical and thourough solutions to Data Analysis in Excel/Tabular SSAS

Whether you are a new Excel user, an experienced Excel Analyst or a seasoned SQL Server Business Intelligence developer, you will want this book in your reference collection. The patterns covered are ones that you will run into and need a solution for if you spend any amount of time developing solutions using PowerPivot or SQL Server Tabular Analysis Services. The explanations and recipes are thorough, starting with the basic pattern and then building up to the optimum solution for each problem. I personally have leveraged Marco's training and Design Patterns to great effect in my consulting practice and can vouch for the quality of any of the books that Marco and Alberto have published.
Topic covered include the basics of the DAX language, Time Intelligence & Time Patterns, Cumulative Totals, Related Distinct Count, Statistical Patterns, Parameter Tables, Static Segmentation, Dynamic Segmentation, ABC Classification, Handling Different Granularities, Budget Patterns, Surveys, Basket Analysis, New and Returning Customers and Parent-Child Hierarchies.

The Kindle version of the book could use a table of contents, but that lack is made up by one being available on the books website, where you can also download full working examples of all of the patterns. I purchased the paperback version, (which gets you a free Kindle version), and it has a complete table of Contents.

Good Material- but very Glitchy Kindle Download for me

This book has been downloaded twice by me and I am having great trouble using it. I have re-downloaded the Kindle software to my Surface Pro 3 Windows 8 with no improvement. There are huge sections of the book- beginning with Chapter 3 that are either blank pages OR the words appear in a column only ONE character wide. Usually there are two columns on a page - in the usual column format- BUT..... try reading a sentence where every letter is above the next- 3 words on a page. What parts of the book I have gone thru are EXACTLY what I wanted- good visuals of how these DAX formulas are put together and how they work. The associated files that accompany the book are good- BUT very tedious to get. Rather than just download a zip file with the files you will need- each one must be sought out and each one appears - not at the top of a web page discussion of same topic but at the bottom of a 2nd column that won't move until you get to the bottom of the 1st column. There are supposed to be links in each chapter to the file you need but as I said- so many chapters are garbled I only found one link. If these glitches can get cleaned up- this book would appear to me- based on what I have seen to be a great value for the $$. I have two other Power BI books that have been a little glitchy with the Kindle-

Any course of study on constitutional and administrative law can be easy or hard depending on whether you like the subject and understand the British political and legal systems.

Teaching the subject has often caused some problems for both tutor and student- mainly from those overseas learners who may not be as familiar with our system in the United Kingdom which can seem strange to those in other jurisdictions.

So, to the rescue comes Pearson’s “Blueprints” series and author Chris Monaghan has brought together an excellent learning programme in four parts covering the following: constitutional fundamentals; government institutions and the prerogative; human rights; and, finally, administrative law. The sub-heading for these “Blueprints” is explained as “your plan for learning” and that is exactly what you get!

The Pearson mission is “to help people make more of their lives through learning” and the way they achieve this aim is to combine innovative learning technology with trusted content and educational expertise. The end product is what they describe as providing “engaging and effective learning experiences that serve people wherever and whenever they are learning” so the titles are excellent in particular for the distance learner.

Pearson Education provides both digital learning tools and testing programmes with their curriculum materials which offers a fresh introduction to this substantive law area.

For those new to the “Blueprints” guides, they are visually designed to assist the acquisition of information giving answers to the most-asked questions including: what is the law and how is it applied; what problems does the law attempt to solve; what do we think about the law; how has the law become this way; what factors are shaping the law today; what do we need to know if we want to understand the subject; where do different points of the law overlap; and where can we find further information about a topic?

As Monaghan says, it is an exciting time to study constitutional and administrative law with all the changes which are taking place in 2014 and 2015. The three key features of Britain’s constitution are brilliantly explored and brought alive by the author: Parliamentary Sovereignty; the rule of law; and the separation of powers.

Whilst this book is only introductory for what is a vast study area, Chris Monaghan fills the gaps which the learner may have with the study programme: the “Blueprint” series create the indispensable building blocks of the subject to give you, the reader, how each area of the law fits together in the big picture which is the English legal and constitutional system today.

Robby Gallaty (PhD, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Senior Pastor of Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN. He was radically saved out of a life of drug addiction on November 12, 2002. In 2008, he founded Replicate Ministries to educate, equip, and empower believers to make disciples who make disciples (replicate.org). He is the author of Rediscovering Discipleship, Growing Up, Firmly Planted, and Bearing Fruit. Robby and his wife Kandi are the proud parents of two sons, Rig and Ryder.

Four Reasons Why You Should Grab This Book Today...

Don’t hesitate to grab this book! There are several reasons why, but here are my top four…

#1 - Heart matters. Discipleship is a buzzword right now, but Robby out the gate informs his readers that the driving motivation for writing this book is to not raise the banner of discipleship. I appreciate Robby’s heart. Up and above anything Gallaty feels called to cultivate a deeper walk with Jesus. Knowing more about Christ is not true discipleship (information), but rather intimately knowing Jesus more leads to a life of obedience, which is authentic discipleship (imitation). As Robby states: “When a person grows closer to Christ, the yield will be discipleship.” (15) This is a message the church must be reminded of daily, so that we don’t lose an understanding of what biblical discipleship truly is.

#2 - History matters. Gallaty offers us in Rediscovering Discipleship an extensive historical and cultural background of discipleship on Jesus’ terms. We have to begin to “think like a Hebrew,” and then prayerfully consider what the path of discipleship looks like for us today. In addition, Robby surveys many key historical figures (Augustine, Luther, Wesley, etc.) and their approaches to making faithful disciples in their time. His chapter on John Wesley’s discipleship methods is outstanding and will sharpen any church leader or layperson to consider if their model and methods today are effective at making disciples.

#3 - Time Matters. In a McChristian culture where people “want it now,” we have to slow down, and begin to set reasonable goals for spiritual growth. Gallaty provides a realistic tone, pace, and vigor in which discipleship should take place. Robby quotes Richard Foster who says it best: “Our tendency is to overestimate what we can accomplish in 1 year, but underestimate what we can accomplish in 10 years.” (138)

#4 - Metrics Matter. Robby hits the nail on the head with this statement: “the metrics you use to determine success or failure should match the nature of the process and the purpose for which it was designed.” (184) Gallaty provides his metrics (MARCS - missional, accountable, reproducible, communal, and scriptural) to determine if genuine discipleship is happening in the context of his local church. It’s important to remember that metrics are simple tools that help one (in the context of community) tangibly see how they are conforming to the image of Christ. You will be challenged to evaluate if your present metrics are working!

This is a must have book on discipleship by Robby Gallaty. The term "discipleship" has become a buzzword in recent years. It need not be.

Gallaty describes the ultimate end goal of discipleship as "to be conformed into the image of Christ - to talk the way he talked, walk the way he walked, and respond the way he responded" (Gallaty, 2015, p 79). Christian, are you making it your ultimate goal to accomplish this task with your time?

In the foreword, Ed Stetzer calls the reader to reflect on personal engagement by asking: "are we seeking God in prayer, spending time in his Word, and surrounding ourselves with people who will challenge us to grow in our spiritual lives?" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 11). In Rediscovering Discipleship, Gallaty first calls his readers to know Jesus before going on mission, and then outlines a method for making disciples. Stetzer affirms this call to know Jesus by commenting, "Too many of us are so focused on what we're supposed to do for Jesus that we lose focus on Jesus himself" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 12). In fact, Gallaty mentions his purpose for writing the book was as a "clarion call for cultivating a deeper walk with Christ" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 15).

An area of extreme intrigue for this lover of Biblical Hebrew and Discipleship is that his book marries the importance between the two. Gallaty takes the reader through how a Hebrew thinker would have processed the Old Testament and the New Testament and argues that our current interpretation of our purpose in the world has been confused over generations of believers analyzing Scripture from a modern perspective, rather than trying to understand the author's original intent. For me, this area of Rediscovering Discipleship alone makes it worth adding to your library.

Gentlemen, this is a Football!

Another great read from Robby Gallaty. Rediscovering Discipleship, adds to and expounds on "Growing Up" as a staple in your discipleship arsenal. This book provides the next layer of reinforcement to the foundation laid in the previous two books. The great Vince Lombardi used to begin every year's camp by holding up a football and stating, "gentlemen, this is a football." The point was, no matter where you are in your development, the basics are foundational and must be reinforced. If Vince Lombardi were a preacher, this would be his, "this is a football" book.

For many a year men have been discussing, arguing, enquiring about certain great basic truths—about the existence and the nature of God, about His relation to man, and about the past and future of humanity. So radically have they differed upon these points, and so bitterly have they assailed and ridiculed one another’s beliefs, that there has come to be a firmly-rooted popular opinion that with regard to all these matters there is no certainty available—nothing but vague speculation amid a cloud of unsound deductions drawn from ill-established premises. And this in spite of the very definite, though frequently incredible, assertions made on these subjects on behalf of the various religions. This popular opinion, though not unnatural under the circumstances, is entirely untrue. There are definite facts available—plenty of them. Theosophy gives them to us; but it offers them not (as the religions do) as matters of faith, but as subjects for study. It is not itself a religion, but it bears to the religions the same relation as did the ancient philosophies. It does not contradict them, but explains them. Whatever in any of them is unreasonable it rejects as necessarily unworthy of the Deity and derogatory to Him; whatever is reasonable in each and all of them it takes up, explains and emphasizes, and thus combines all into one harmonious whole.

About the Author
Charles Webster Leadbeater (1847-1934) was a Church of England clergyman until he joined the Theosophical Society in 1883. He spent some years in Sri Lanka working for the revival of Buddhism, and later became the Presiding Bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, which seeks to combine the preservation of the Catholic sacraments with the widest measure of freedom of thought and interpretation of the scriptures. He was a highly developed clairvoyant and the author of over thirty books on the spiritual life and on the psychic nature of man. He unfolded and perfected his own psychic faculties under the guidance of his Adept teacher and in 1893 began his clairvoyant investigations, on occasion collaborating with Annie Besant, the second President of the Theosophical Society. His worldwide lectures presented a new viewpoint to thousands of people.

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THEOSOPHY, BY A PROMINENT EARLY MEMBER

Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854-1934) was a former Anglican priest, who became an influential member of the Theosophical Society, and was co-initiator (with J. I. Wedgwood) of the Liberal Catholic Church. He resigned from the Theosophical Society in 1906 after accusations of pederasty, but was readmitted a few years later. He wrote many books and publications, such as Life After Death and How Theosophy Unveils It, The Masters and the Path, A Textbook of Theosophy, The Astral Plane: Its Scenery, Inhabitants And Phenomena, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1902 book, "Theosophy may be described to the outside world as an intelligent theory of the universe. Yet for those who have studied it, it is not theory, but fact; for it is a definite science, capable of being studied, and its teachings are verifiable by investigation and experiment for those who are willing to take the trouble to qualify themselves for such enquiry. It is a statement of the great facts of Nature so far as they are known---an outline of the scheme of our corner of the universe." (Pg. 3) Later, he adds, "I am not offering to the reader a creed to be swallowed like a pill; I am trying to set before him a system to study, and, above all, a live to live. I ask no blind faith from him; I simply suggest to him the consideration of the Theosophical teaching as a hypothesis, though to me it is no hypothesis, but a living fact." (Pg. 12)

He outlines the following principles: "1. God exists, and He is good. He is the great lifegiver who dwells within us and without us, is undying and eternally beneficient... 2. Man is immortal, and his future is one whose glory and splendor have no limit. 3. A Divine law of absolute justice rules the world, so that each man is in truth his own judge, the dispenser of glory or gloom to himself, the decreer of his life, his reward, his punishment." (Pg. 14) He adds, "there is an absolute certainty of final attainment for every human soul, no matter how far he may seem to have strayed from the path of evolution." (Pg. 16)

He strongly rejects the doctrine of Transmigration: "[Reincarnation] must not be confounded with a theory held by the ignorant, that it was possible for a soul which had reached humanity in its evolution to rebecome that of an animal. No such retrogression is within the limits of possibility; when once man comes into existence... he can never again fall back into what is in truth a lower kingdom of nature, whatever mistakes he may make or however he may fail to take advantage of his opportunities." (Pg. 56)

He states, "This long process of evolution has been carried out not only on this earth, but on other globes connected with it; but the subject is much too vast to be fully treated in an elementary book such as this. It forms the principal theme of Madame Blavatsky's monumental work, The Secret Doctrine... " (Pg. 71-72) He explains, "Theosophy ... makes it absolutely clear to [its students] that no undeserved suffering can ever come to any man. Whatever trouble we may encounter is simply of the nature of a debt that we have incurred; since it has to be paid, the sooner it is cleared off the better." (Pg. 88-89)

This is a useful introduction and overview to Theosophy, from one of its most prominent early leaders.

"An Outline of Theosophy" by C.W. Leadbeater is written in a style accessible to all. In each section, the author recommends other Theosophical works for those who would like to explore further some of the principles expounded briefly in this little book. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Is there a rare disease today?

Is there a rare disease today? I would say that my instructors said NO, there is no such thing. That, is why I bought the older volume. There is always something you could learn from referencing older volumes? The compilation has some insight to older practices. I have not yet fully taken the time to finish the volume. But have learned something valuable already.

Worth more than what i paid for it!

useful guide to rare horses and "zebras"

Although some of the conditions described in this book are not rare, they are not the commonest of diseases, either. I'd call it a guide to rare horse breeds and "zebras." There is not a great deal of information about each disease, but that's fine, because the purpose of this book is to help you think of alternative diagnoses. If you don't think of the diagnosis, you'll never make the diagnosis.
