In September 2004, "Desperate Housewives" literally became an overnight sensation and brought a fresh, quirky twist to the wrinkled, faded genre of the prime-time soap opera. Almost immediately, the actresses appeared on every magazine cover imaginable during the period of the first two seasons of the show. Gradually, interest waned and DH has practically fallen off the pop-culture radar the last several years. Imagine my joy when I was standing in a checkout line and I saw that Bree, Lynette, Gabby and Susan are gracing the cover of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY in the magazine's classy send-off to the show, which will say goodbye for good this May. Even "Dallas" failed the make the cover back in 1991 when it petered out after 14 seasons, so the fact that the editors still think highly enough of the show to give it a cover story is compliment enough (although it does look like they went overboard in Photoshopping Teri Hatcher). There is a nice lengthy article inside that discusses the show's highlights and also the lawsuit against producer/creator Marc Cherry by Nicolette Sheridan (Edie Britt). A nice commemorative issue for you DH memorabilia collectors. I bought 2 copies!

Better than previous edition

I am a declared fan of this book. I teach on how to do research to med students and this book is very straight forward and practical.
I believe that this book is a must for physicians that want to do research and have no time to learn everything. It is designed for everyone to pose their research question, select the design (which I believe is the right way to do research)(first 6 chapters) and then read the chapters about the selected design. It has additional chapters about searching funds(seldom included in research books) and ethical issues. My favorite chapters are the first two for beginners with no research experience (research question), the fifth (hypothesis) and the sixth (sample size), and the questionnaire chapter. The questionnaire chapter is a masterpiece, it teaches about difficult subjects in a practical and very easy way for physicians to understand. I have let away most of my books about questionnaires aside with this chapter (for physicians, for research specialties you might go to other books). And in this new edition the data management chapter has included the use of software for data analysis.
I hope the Spanish version of this 3rd edition will be available soon.

Designing Clinical Research

When I think of books about statistical analysis and clinical research, I'm not expecting a page turner, and while this book isn't taut with suspense or plot, it is remarkably readable and even has a sense of humor. In a clinical textbook, that's saying quite a bit. The writing is clear, the examples are understandable, and I find I am getting a good sense of the functions and applications of biostatistics with less angst than I would have thought possible. I highly recommend this book to anyone setting out to write a grant for the first time, or design graduate level research. Well written, relevant and pleasantly digestible.

Amazing book

I bought the previous edition and was so impressed with it that as soon as this edition came out, I bought it as well. I think that someone with no methodology training stands to benefit the most from reading this book. Having said that, I have a Master's in epidemiology and I will tell you, there is always something worthwhile to read in this book, whenever I come back to it.

If you are serious about clinical research, this is one book not to miss!!

A different version of the New Testament

Building on his hypothesis that events of pre-exile Jews of the Old Testament took place in Arabia rather than in Palestine, Salibi advances another hypothesis claiming that Jesus belonged to a Jewish royalty line and initially resided in Arabia. Jesus, according to Salibi, came to the Jewish establishment at the time to claim the rule, much to the opposition of the established Jewish rulers.

Salibi argues that accordingly, during the time of Jesus, there were many versions about him, one of which was in Arabia, the original homeland of Jesus. Salibi uses as evidence the differences between Paul the Apostle and the disciples, especially the brother of Jesus James, and cites a trip that Paul had made to Arabia to learn the true teachings of his lord.

The book offers its arguments with sharp evidence and Salibi's writing style is entertaining. Readers better have knowledge of the New Testament when they read this book and it is also advisable to be familiar with the geography of the region.

Unlike how some might depict this book, it does not interfere with the Christian faith but merely corrects some common misconceptions about the historicity and the geography of biblical events.

To my knowledge no-one does historiography like Salibi. While not a Biblical scholar himself, he nevertheless comes to the subject armed with a formidable arsenal: an insider's easy understanding of Near Eastern culture and society, a detailed knowledge of Arabic, Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew, an acute read of character and a nose for falsehood and deliberate ambiguity. He writes in immaculate English, patiently teasing out his hypotheses (sometimes with a novelist's mastery of suspense) and somehow knows how to bring the reader with him, even when wading through the most speculative of waters. He has a tenacious imagination and is absolutely rigorous in his pursuit of plausible alternatives when the official version falls short - as it so often does in this case. And as if this wasn't enough, what of course gives him a unique edge is his extraordinary grasp of the topography of the area from the Hijaz to Palestine (see The Bible Came from Arabia). I won't give the game away, as it would spoil a great read. But not only does he nail a whole host of inconsistencies, falsehoods and the like in Acts and the Gospels but his explantion of how these accounts, including Paul's, came about are rivetingly authentic. His own reconstruction is worthy of Conan Doyle. While Gnosticism barely gets a mention, Salibi's reliance on the Koranic version of the Jesus story is highly illuminating. The tone throughout is modest and the author writes as a Christian. The last 2 pages, dwelling on the subject of religious belief, myth and historiography, are a model of eloquence and humanity.

Too much is out of date to recommend

As a nursing instructor I was disappointed on how much of this book is out of date. Many chapters in this 2012 book have references no newer than 2007. A particularly egregious example is the chapter on handheld computers. It uses the out-of-date term of PDA and is about the use of Palm and Windows CE handhelds. The existence of iOS or Android smartphones and tablets is completely missing. A few chapters are updated but it looks like most are not. The book uses a very unhelpful diagram/model to organize the content. Reading this book was like going back in time five years due to numerous outdated references. Writing a nursing informatics text is difficult with technology changing so quickly. The authors did not seem to make much effort to rectify that with this second edition. There are better choices for textbooks on nursing informatics.

Wordy, hard to read

I must say that nursing informatics doesn't much interest me, so that may bias my review of this book. I'm required to take a course in informatics as part of my BSN. Our professor informed us that this was the only textbook on informatics, which was why we were required to purchase it for the class.

I can hardly keep my eyes open every time I try to read a chapter, it's so dry and abstract. It's not that concepts aren't interesting, they actually are. Use of information systems in nursing and the health sciences, is absolutely the wave of the future. And looking at nurses and "information processors" and "knowledge workers" is creative and useful. But the book seems to try and use lofty academic language, big words, passive voice, and overly formal descriptions to describe simple concepts, making the reading boring and abstract. Also, when new terms are introduced, the authors don't plainly define the terms...They give long winded histories of how the terms are used, how they evolved to their current state, and what someone said about the terms, but they rarely come out and say "this is what we mean by this term". So I find that if I really want to know what a term means, I have to translate it into plain words so that it makes sense.

My professor has the previous (2009) edition and had given us study questions from that edition, without realizing that some of the topics were no longer mentioned in the latest edition. So I got online and looked up some of the answers on google books (previous edition). I was surprised to find many of the same concepts discussed in clearer language, with less wordy definitions. Not sure why you would want to take nice clear writing and muddy it all up, but that's apparently what happened. Maybe it didn't sound academic enough?

My motivation for writing a review is to encourage folks to buy the 2009 edition. If you aren't required to purchase the newest edition, I'd consider at least getting the previous edition first...it seems to be a much better read. Or you could get the 2009 edition on kindle and this edition in paper form. I would most definitely not recommend buying this book unless you are required to, or are passionate about nursing informatics and want a more current description of it in book form. But seriously, if we are talking about currency of technology, data, and information systems, why not just use the internet, proceedings of conferences and peer reviewed articles?

Reads like a bad article

This is an awful book. I am truly amazed that the authors were able to make a book so long with so little to say. Like a bad scholarly article, the only interesting points in the book are quotes from other sources. You're probably looking at this book because you have to have it for class, so try to share a copy with friends to lessen the expense.
