Basically every word is introduced in three forms: Arabic form, transliteration form and English meaning. A beginner non-native who only desires to speak and communicate orally can rely on transliteration and English, while a more experienced student, a heritage student or a non-native with a year of exposure to Arabic who can read and has learned some basic survival vocabulary, may also benefit from the Arabic script and the grammatical notes available in the book. Even if you are well versed in MSA, you still need to have this book. You may already be able to read the newspaper headlines or listen to the news and read a street sign, but it will sound very awkward to use MSA when you meet and greet someone, need a taxi, ask for directions, bargain and negotiate, open a bank account, order a meal or a sandwich, chat with someone in the street or in a caf�, enter a supermarket or a store, ask for the time, or make an appointment and get to know someone on a personal or even professional level, etc. The book is divided into 72 sections, and 24 lessons, mainly by topic. Each section contains pertinent vocabulary needed and used when dealing with the situation at hand. So if you are looking for a word about clothing, or medicine, for example, you simply look in that particular section. There are also sufficient exercises in translation with answers provided for you to doublecheck and verify your knowledge. Do the exercise first before you look up the answer. Continuously test yourself, memorize new words, read and speak out loud even when you are alone and pick the brain of a native friend or acquaintance. Lebanese, and Arabs in general, are impressed when you attempt to speak Arabic with them. They will go out of their way to help you and make your acquaintance. However, they will also try first to practice their English or French with you. Most of them are bilingual or even trilingual. Do not fall for this. Insist on using your Arabic first. The best way to learn a foreign language is through total immersion. Go ahead, immerse yourself. You will be forced to float. Drowning is not an option. You are too smart to drown. Study this book, and find a group of natives to chat with. Better yet, visit Lebanon and have some maza, tabbouli and araq. Then, we’ll talk. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Keep on trying. Practice makes perfect.

About the Author
George Nicolas El-Hage, Ph.D. is a Lebanese-American poet, professor, linguist, administrator and writer. He was born in Mansourieh El-Metn, Lebanon in 1952. His father was Nicolas Iskandar El-Hage and his mother was Martha Abounader El-Hage. Dr. El-Hage completed his elementary and secondary school education in Lebanon. He acquired his B.A. in Arabic Literature from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon. While in Beirut, El-Hage studied with and was influenced by poets like Buland al-Haidari and Khalil Hawi. He then emigrated to the United States where he completed both his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Arabic and Comparative Literature at the State University of New York in Binghamton. His dissertation (later published into a book by NDU Press, Lebanon) was on William Blake and Kahlil Gibran: Poets of Prophetic Vision. He has taught at Yale University, Binghamton University, The Lebanese University, Columbia University, the Monterey Institute of International Studies (a graduate school of Middlebury College) and the Defense Language Institute. His academic career has been equally spent between teaching, authoring, lecturing and administration. Dr. El-Hage is a prolific writer with a perfect command of both English and Arabic languages. His training and expertise in the field of Arabic and Comparative Literature has enabled him to delve into a wide range of topics and areas covering literature, mythology, mysticism, language acquisition, criticism, theology and art. He is a published poet in Arabic, both in Modern Standard and in spoken Levantine Dialect as well as in Lebanese Zajal. He also writes poetry in English and is an accomplished translator. Dr. El-Hage has published seven volumes of poetry, numerous research articles, books on language pedagogy and poetry in Lebanese Dialect and Zajal. His poetry betrays a marked fluctuation between a deep romantic sensitivity and a tragic existential awareness which colors his reading of current universal and regional events. The tragedy of his embattled country constitutes a dominant theme in his writings. El-Hage is a supporter of the free verse movement in Modern Arabic Poetry. Nevertheless, he still appreciates the Qasida ‘Amudiyya, the classical form of traditional Arabic Poetry. He always chooses short meters, and his poetry is characterized by its musical effects.

Don't Bother

The books is written in a mediocre style. Lessons do not begin until page 130. Up to that point you're given table after table of vocabulary (a mixture of both words and phrases that span 72 scenarios).

I don't see anything wrong with this if this was a book compiled by a student for students; however, since the author maintains a Ph.D and makes the claim that their expertise is in teaching, publishing, translating and linguistics (to name a few) then I would expect some kind of professionalism in their work.

The text offers pronunciation drills but provides neither CD nor link to access audio.

This text feels rushed and I advise all trying to use this book to learn the Levantine dialect of Arabic to look elsewhere. I would recommended Alif Baa and Al-Kitaab since they offer the Levant dialect side by side with MSA and Egyptian (I use this series and am happy with it but bought this book because I solely focused on the Levantine dialect).

If you are a total beginner to Levantine Arabic, look elsehwere

I used this book for weeks. I tried so hard. I really did. All I did was learn a few words, I could not make a sentence. The lessons start 2/3 of the book in and they are awful. There is no explanation of the grammar or why it works. They are just conversations and phrases with no real context and you aren't even told what they mean, if you are, then you aren't told why the words have the endings that they have. Just today I started a new course and after four hours I was making sentences and understanding why they are the way they are - this book is beyond terrible. Four hours of another course did more than over a month of this book. He is a native speaker and just does not understand that certain things don't occur to us as naturally as they do to him, I give him that. But why write a book if you don't have that understanding? He could pick up knitting instead... seriously, if you are a native speaker writing a book for native speakers of another language, know that they need a good explanation of every part of the grammar. Now I am using My Easy Arabic. I gave up on Levantine until I know MSA, because this is a mess. I can't find a source for Levantine that isn't either terrible or way out of my budget or reserved for those who already know MSA. Supposedly al-Kitaab has a Levantine course, but it is not as great as their Egyptian one. Those are all the suggestions I can give you, just not this book. Maybe make a Syrian friend. :)

Needs sound files!

This book would be 5-star if it had audio files. It is presented as a "self-guided handbook" for students with no knowledge of Arabic who want to learn Lebanese vocabulary and pronunciation. It's beautifully printed and full of material (245 pages) but without audio it is virtually useless. If I have just missed the audio link, please let me know here and I will upgrade my rating to 5 stars!

Margie Palatini is the author of many outrageously funny books for children, including Piggie Pie!, illustrated by Howard Fine; Moosetache, Mooseltoe, and the Bad Boys series, all illustrated by Henry Cole; The Cheese, illustrated by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher; No Biting, Louise, illustrated by Matthew Reinhart; and Gorgonzola, illustrated by Tim Bowers. She lives with her family in New Jersey.

Noah Z. Jones is an author, illustrator, and animator. He has illustrated numerous books for children, including Not Norman by Kelly Bennett and Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. Noah lives with his family in Los Angeles, California.

Great Lesson For Children

Edward had all kinds of stuff. His house was full of stuff. His friends no longer came to visit Edward because his house was packed full of his stuff. He wanted to spend time with the stuff instead of his friends.

One day a big truck drove down the street in front of Edward's house and caused it to shake. All the stuff in the house collapsed and trapped Edward inside. He had a tiny space to stay that was surrounded by stuff.

Edward's friends were worried about him. They dug through the stuff in the house and found Edward dazed and alone. Edward finally decided to get rid of the stuff.

Edward's friends helped him clean out his house. They sold, donated and trashed "stuff" until it was all gone. Edward had his house back!

I believe that children must be taught to organize their stuff. They must learn how to keep the things that are most valuable to them and discard the things that they no longer use.

"Stuff" is an excellent book to share with children of all ages. The story is humorous and fun. Things take a serious turn when Edward chooses his stuff over relationships and experiences with his friends and family.

Life is about choices. This book will teach children that it is nice to have "stuff", but friends and good times are so much nicer. Highly recommended.

Wonderful book

Wonderful book. Adults would benefit from reading it as well as children that it is meant for. This would make a great gift for a child that can't seem to get enough.

Funny Stuff

I bought this for a school library,but bought a second copy for my husband who is always saving "important/I might need it someday" stuff. Cute story.
