Boxes are formatted Horizontally, not Vertically

There are 3 main issues I have with this product. The first, being that the cover of the book would lead you to believe that the paper inside was formatted similarly. It is not. The cover indicates vertical boxes, but the actual paper has the boxes horizontal on the page. Additionally, the pages are not perforated for removal. I thought this was a notebook (as listed) but instead, it is just a book. The pages are not intended to be removed, which makes using the back side of the paper difficult due to the spine. Finally, the cover really bothers me due to the blurring of the Japanese Characters which stand out in stark contrast to the properly printed title of the Notebook. It looks as though the image used for the top portion of the cover was very small, and it was stretched many times its original size to fit. The blurriness of the characters and crisp font on the bottom part of the book actually make my eyes hurt to look at.

I will use this notebook, and flip the book itself horizontally to practice, but I will certainly not repurchase this item, and I do not recommend it to others, mostly due to the orientation of the paper inside being different from the orientation on the cover. I understand it is in poor taste to judge a book by its cover, but since we cannot look inside the Notebook before buying, we kind of have to go by the cover and description, both of which are either misleading or vague. I wish I did not purchase this product, and I hope that my Review pictures will help potential buyers get a better feel for what they are purchasing before they commit to buying.

-- I have included pictures of the cover, to try to convey the blurry jpeg look of the images used in comparison with the bottom portion of the cover which is much crisper. I have also included a picture of the opened Notebook so you can see exactly how the interior pages look, and finally, a picture with the ruler to show the size of the boxes (because that's something I would've liked to have seen too!) --

Neat Japanese style notebook.

I thought I would use this to practice kanji, but decided it is perfect as a simple Japanese diary, to help practice writing down my daily thoughts in Japanese, while also learning to write top-down, right-left. I recommend this for beginners and intermediate students, or if you're teaching yourself. And at the price, it's a very reasonable value.

A must have for beginners!

This paper is excellent! I'm in my first semester of Japanese and this has been a life saver, I take almost all my notes in it and its great to use and has enough space between the columns and in the margins for me to write in English. Its great to get the character size consistant, I'm one of the few kids in the class that can keep their characters the same size because I practice on this paper. It bends easily but keeps its shape well. Nice crisp lines.

Una trama que te atrapa

Muy buena narrativa que te engancha a la historia de principio a fin, una novela bien escrita que te absorbe y mantiene atento al desarrollo de las historias de los personajes y en como el autor va tejiendo la trama y preparando el final, recomendable lectura sin duda alguna.

Could have been better, but it's ok overall

This book isn't as great for beginners as previous reviewers have said. It's just that it's better than many of the other "beginners" books, which appear to have been written by people who are so deep into the subject they've forgotten what it's actually like to be a beginner.
The authors claim to be aiming for simplicity, and ask beginners to read chapter-by-chapter, but a number of times I've found that they reference material from chapters well advanced into the book. This is particularly noticeable in the "Self-Test" and "Try This" sections at the end of each chapter.
Although great additions, it's really frustrating to thoroughly read a chapter and then be given a "Self-Test" or asked to "Try This" - with an example of something you haven't read, and won't encounter for another 2 or three chapters. It's frustrating and makes you feel like giving up. A better proof-read, or better feedback from actual beginners may have picked these issues up. So, it's far from perfect but none of the 'beginners' books are. But, if you can get over those issues, which in the scheme of things are quite minor, this is indeed a useful guide to starting out in HTML/CSS.

good beginner's book

this book was a good beginner's html book. if you're coming from a programming background though, you'll be able to tell that it was not written by a programmer (which she herself admits to). but that's okay, since you end up learning the subject material anyway.

i had to subtract a star because there were some misstatements (e.g. writing 'attribute' instead of 'property') and quite a few code mistakes, as another reviewer pointed out.

i don't agree with the 2 star reviews. this book is a lot better than that.

A Great Beginners Guide

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.

This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read.

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

Great book! Perfect for the beginner.

After a ten year break I decided to get back into aquarium keeping. I knew the basics but I was a little rusty on all the details. This book was a perfect refresher course on all of the intricacies of keeping a tropical aquarium - and I learnt a ton of new stuff too. I am setting up a 10 gallon quarantine tank (in my office) and a 29 gallon display tank (in the living room). I have followed this book page by page and a few weeks later my tanks are ready to accept fish - yes, I'm going shopping this weekend!

The author covers every aspect of setting up a new tank. Filters, lighting, substrate, food, you name it - it's all here. The explanation about the critical subject of water chemistry is the best I've read anywhere. There's also a ton of info about plants if you want to get into that side of things. He then goes on to recommend the most appropriate kinds of fish for each stage in the development of your new aquarium - all great information from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about.

The book itself is full color, with lots of graphs and charts to hold your interest. The photographs are excellent.

So, all in all, a great reference for the beginner. Highly recommended. Glad I bought it.

Don't watch a movie before reading the book very often

It's not normal practice for me to watch a film prior to reading the book it's based on, but when I do, watching the film can lead me to some very good books. Such was the case with Millennium by John Varley. I had seen the film with Kris Kristofferson and Cheryl Ladd a number of times but had been frustrated in my efforts to obtain a copy of "Air Raid", the original short story the film was credited as being based on, until one day when the book almost literally fell into my lap.
I gotta tell you, Millennium was one of those books I could not put down. From the first page, I found myself absolutely enraptured by the characters of both Louise Baltimore and Bill Smith. Varley's Smith is actually very close to the character that Kris Kristofferson portrayed in the movie, but his Louise Baltimore is a very tough, take-charge kind of gal that's unlike the one played by Cheryl Ladd in the film. That Louise always seemed to be looking to her personal robot, Sherman, for advice, whereas the Louise of Varley's book might have depended on Sherman for emotional support at times, but generally kept her own counsel and scoffed at the very notion that Sherman's ideas could be taken seriously in a critical mission such as the one she was running to Smith's time in order to get her lost "stunner". The funny thing was, in the end it was the Big Computer who was running everything, and not Louise or Bill or even Sherman.
I am currently on my 6th copy of this excellent time-travel novel (the other 5 have worn out due to repeated readings), and I hope that all of you who are sci-fi enthusiasts will take the time to pick up a copy and read it, if you haven't read it already. It's a definite page-turner.

You have to read Millennium!

I first read this book in the 80's and fell in love with it! It is what got me into science fiction and I've never looked back. I saw in at Amazon.com and thought what a great time it would be to read it again after all those years. As my first copy got borrowed and never returned. I read it and it is still one of the best books I've ever read. A must read!!!

Millenium by John Varley

I don't much like reading books about time travel. Mostly it just makes me dizzy, I don't deal well with paradoxes. There are a few exceptions, like Lest Darkness Fall (Pyramid SF, F-817) and Time and Again. Millennium is another that has taken up permanent occupancy on my bookshelves, and I've been puzzling over why.

I think it's because the premise for time travel in this novel is practical. The novel's present is robbing/mining/harvesting/exploiting the past to save the future, to ensure the survival of humankind. It wasn't a bolt of lightning (Lest Darkness Fall), it wasn't a self-induced hypnotic state (Time and Again), no, this time the narrative creates a time travel machine specifically for this task and none other.

The motivation is great on a character level, too. Louise and the rest of her Snatch Team are sacrificing their own lives for the sake of the rest of the human race, and FAA investigator Bill Smith's job and personal curiosity, as well as his love for Louise, pushes him inevitably toward solving this mystery.

One of the best robot characters ever created in SF, too, and a Chapter 2 shout-out to Robert A. Heinlein. Nothing not to love here.

In fact, time to reread it again...

Millennium, isn't bad, either.

Varley is also the author of what I think is one of the best sf short stories ever, "In the Hall of the Martian Kings," collected in Persistance of Vision.
