Where's Charley?

CHARLEY: I remember the moment it started. It was October 2004, very late one Friday night. We were in the old office in Bulwer Street with boxes all around us, bits of paper, all the office equipment gone. For a few minutes we just stood there reflecting. This is where Long Way Round had all begun, where we'd planned everything, checked and re-checked the maps: it's where we'd first seen the bikes.

It was over, finished: we'd ridden around the world, a mammoth journey; an epic adventure. But it was over now.

The maps were still on the wall and we stood before them once more. Ewan glanced at me.

'What do you reckon, Charley?'

'I don't know.'

'South America, India maybe?'

I looked up at him. 'What about riding through Africa?'

Ewan and I first met on a film set in County Clare more than a dozen years ago, our friendship born out of our passion for motorbikes. We've been best mates ever since. We'd always talked about riding together; France maybe, Spain. But then Ewan walked into a map shop, and over dinner that night we decided to forget France or Spain, we'd go the whole hog and ride around the world. The adventure of a lifetime, the two of us off on a couple of bikes. I wasn't sure we could pull it off; I wasn't sure it would even happen.

But it did. A late-night conversation became a dream, the dream became an adventure and that adventure proved to be a pivotal point in my life.

I grew up in the movie business, but I'm dyslexic...and I mean badly: if it hadn't been for my dad taking a year out to teach me to read, life could've been very hard. Even so, reading for acting parts could be difficult sometimes. Historically I'd enjoyed success in movies like The Emerald Forest, but after Long Way Round the direction of my life altered completely. I found myself in places like the pit lane of Moto GP circuits with heroes like Kenny Roberts grabbing my arm and telling me how much he'd enjoyed watching our journey.

I was no longer just John Boorman's son - in fact my dad rang me up the other day to tell me he'd introduced himself to someone and they'd said, 'Oh, Charley Boorman's dad'.

My career was now in motorcycling - albeit not in a conventional way - and the success of Long Way Round enabled me to live another dream. Ever since I can remember I'd always wanted to race bikes, so together with Russ Malkin, a very good friend and producer/director of Long Way Round, I entered the world's most dangerous race: the 2006 Dakar rally - five days in January where I rode ridiculous distances at ridiculous speeds before an innocuous crash tipped me off and I broke both my hands. (I never made it to the sand dunes and I've unfinished business there.) That dream was over for now, but another was just beginning.

Ewan flew in for the end of the Dakar to congratulate us all (my fellow teammate Simon Pavey had made it all the way to the finishing line). He was joined by film maker David Alexanian, the fourth member of the team that created Long Way Round. There we were in Dakar - all together again. And there in the scorching sun we confirmed what we had first mapped out over a year before in Bulwer Street. The adventure was on again - John O'Groats to Cape Town: we would ride the Long Way Down.

Once my hands were healed, the first thing Ewan and I did was return to the Royal Geographical Society in London, the place where we'd mapped out the first trip. Our bikes parked outside, I took my helmet off. The old red brick building seemed very familiar.

'So here we are again, Ewan. What do we say to them this time?'

He laughed. 'How about: Hi, remember us? We're back for more.'

Inside I quickly recalled how solemn the place felt; the arched windows, blue carpets and the magnificent ancient maps that decked the walls. One in particular dated from 1920 and at the bottom it was engraved with images of the old continent, names and places going back to colonial days when just about every European country fought for a share of the spoils. Ewan pointed to a picture of a guy in a pith helmet in a pretty compromising position with a tribesman. 'Hey, Charley,' he said. 'Here's how you made friends with the natives back then. See, you grabbed a man by his willy.'

In the journey-planning office we met the same assistant we'd spoken to before and she had yet more large-scale maps spread on a mahogany table.

'Have you decided on a route?' she asked us.

I shook my head. 'Nothing definite yet, but we're going to ride down through Europe, I think, probably cross from Sicily.'

'We'd like to follow the Nile,' Ewan added. 'It's one of those journeys, you know; one of the great trips of the world.'

She nodded. 'Sudan is pretty unstable and so are parts of Ethiopia. You'll need to be up on your paperwork.'

I rolled my eyes. 'Jesus, paperwork. The Ukraine, Ewan. Remember?'

'You mean when we waited nine hours to get in - how could I possibly forget?'

'Ethiopia is absolutely beautiful though,' the assistant went on, 'and despite the problems they're really trying to build up tourism. Sudan is full of open spaces, the Africa of the movies, if you like.' She smiled then, a little warily. 'There are security issues, however.'

I cast a glance at Ewan. She was right, as we knew only too well. We'd only just started investigating the route and already knew we'd need armed guards to get us through places like northern Kenya. We were thinking about going into the Democratic Republic of Congo, and weren't sure whether we'd have to go through Zimbabwe. This was going to be a very different journey from Long Way Round, and I think we were only just beginning to realise how different.

Having reacquainted ourselves with the Royal Geographical Society we headed for the wilds of Devon and a weekend's survival course. The weather was shit, a cold, drizzling rain, and to make things even more miserable, Ewan had his tent up before me. He was crowing about it. I mean, he never gets his tent up before me. It was galling. There was some consolation however: he'd put it up at the bottom of a hill and it was raining, which meant there was every chance he'd have a river running through it before long.

After that, we got lost in the 'wild wood' whilst hunting for strategically placed survival rations, and then we had to build shelters from fallen branches and bits of foliage.

Not that we're competitive or anything, but my A-frame and ridge was up, the sides constructed and I was already onto the roof whilst Ewan was still going on about a 'long ridge pole' and the 'bell end' being big enough. After making a wall of branch and fern, the last layer was leaves. Lying inside I could still see daylight and my feet stuck out, though I only discovered that when the instructor kicked them. He proceeded to tell us about a friend of his who went to sleep with his head sticking out of a similar shelter in Africa, only to be woken by a hyena ripping off his face. Our instructor liked telling those kinds of stories: he liked to tell them a lot.

He was complimentary about my shelter, however, testing thestructural quality by climbing right over it while I was lying inside. In his own words, it didn't budge an inch.

Ewan was arranging leaves and ferns and other bits and pieces; like a boy scout he was, having a whale of a time. 'Colour coding confuses your enemy,' I heard him mutter.

Finally he was finished, the branches covered with sprays of fern and leaf. He was stretched out inside and the instructor asked him if he felt confident that it was structurally sound.

Ewan replied that he did.

'Good,' the instructor said, 'because I'm going to walk on it.'

He'd barely shifted his weight when the 'bell end' Ewan had been so proud of collapsed, showering our Jedi Knight in broken branches.

For a moment there was silence. Then from the depths we heard him: 'Yeah, well, I think obviously there's room for improvement. But generally...' We could see his hands, gesticulating from under the crushed ridge. 'I was quite happy with its...you know, I liked the feel of it and it smelled really nice.'

On cue and not without a certain sense of ceremony, the rest of the shelter collapsed; a few moments later Ewan emerged: half a beard, his woollen hat askew.

'Shame,' he said. 'I put a lot of love into that.'

EWAN: What Charley didn't mention was that his A-frame was put together by the instructor. That's why it was so solid. I did mine myself. Not quite the same thing, is it?

The instructor really did like his tales of horror: hyenas eating people; elephants trampling our campsite; not to mention the machete-wielding madmen lurking outside every bar. Having said that, he also told us that despite our laid-back attitude, I was 'wily' and Charley was really 'industrious'.

From Devon, hyenas and elephants, it was Essex and a replica of the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. Driving down a track in a 4x4 we had the feeling we were about to be ambushed. We were right - just as we were considering potential escape routes a mine exploded in front of the truck.

David Alexanian, who would be joining us on the real trip, was driving. He immediately started backing up. More flash bangs went off, mines, or grenades maybe, exploding behind us.

Now we heard the rattle of gunfire and a man appeared on our right. Heavily built, he approached the vehicle at a crouch, wearing camouflage and carrying an AK-47. We dived for the doors on the passenger side only to find another guy bellowing at us and brandishing not a gun, but a couple of vicious-looking axes.

We piled out of the vehicle. Hands in the air, we tried to talk to the gunmen - a whole gang of them now. We tried to explain about UNICEF, and what we were doing. They weren't listening or didn't understand: they didn't care. Before we knew it we were forced away from the vehicles, our captors demanding money, jackets, our watches.

We'd discussed such a situation with our instructors and they had advised us that in really dangerous areas, convoys of vehicles were put together under armed guard. Our trip was high profile ...

Not great literature, but an enjoyable ride nonetheless
By Luke T. Evans
I've enjoyed both of the "Long Way" books. They're an enjoyable read even if they aren't great literature or exceptional travel writing. Ewan and Charley seem like two great guys and their humanity and down-to-earth natures really show in these stories. Some of the reviews here have been negative, with many of them criticizing the trip's supposed lack of purity in that Ewan and Charley had a support team and a few sponsors. Whatever. If you ask me, the support team was pretty thin, and it's clear that many times they were just winging it and improvising as they went along. This was emphatically not a Camel Trophy-type extraveganza, with flocks of accompanying helicopters, spare vehicles, and squads of mechanics standing by with truckloads of spare parts, and it certainly didn't appear to be a luxury trip by any stretch. Call it a compromise between a full-on expedition (complete with porters and truckloads of "essential equipment") and a threadbare by-the-seat-of-our-pants penniless slog taking many months or even years. Sure, in a perfect world you'd take two years to undergo such a journey, and thus provide yourself with plenty of time to see everything and get to know the people and cultures in great detail. But let's face it, 99.99 percent of us will never be able to pull that off, either due to: 1) family/career obligations; 2) a lack of time; 3) a lack of money; 4) a lack of balls; or 5) all of the above. That's just the way it is. But these guys went out and did it, however imperfectly. That's just fine in my book. Jolly good, blokes!

A well received sequel!
By Kevin J. Brigandi
In Long Way Round, Charlie and Ewan set the stage for two best friends and their motorcycle journeys across the globe. You get to know the cast and crew in a personal way and see the journey through the eyes of avid adventure motorcyclists. In Long Way Down, they've ditched the whiney trip doctor from the first trip and replaced him with a doctor who better fits the spirit of the team. This film feels more personal to the viewer. Charlie and Ewan are more emotional this time around and the scenery and imagery is amazing. The stories of the journey are heartfelt and you really get a different perspective of how people live with each other and their environment throughout several different countries in Africa. The language is colorful at times for a younger audience (Charlie uses the F word extensively) but the story and journey are worth it. If you are not a motorcyclist, you will probably still enjoy the movie. If you are a motorcyclist, you'll be planning your next trip!

Another great journey.
By Nathaniel J. Kuhn
Due to scheduling complications with the ferry for the first 1/3rd of the trip, Long Way Down (LWD) had a rushed and more stressful feel to it in comparison to Long Way Round. This led to a slightly less enjoyable experience for the reader/viewer in my opinion.

Nevertheless, this voyage is still Ewan and Charley at their best. These guys enjoy motorcycling and traveling on them so much that they make the best out of any situation.

The way they document the trip is so honest, and really opens you up to their personalities - something you rarely get to see with famous people. It's so honest and humble, yet funny and appropriately opinionated at the same time. The quality of the book - the editing, the photos and the writing are superb in their natural style.

The fact that they take time to do charity work as well as show the world things that most choose to ignore is wonderful. Plus, like the LWR trip - it's an incredible way to show the beauty of our world and politeness of so many of the people in it.

The books and movies are true magic on film - whether or not you like motorcycles or not (i am obsessed), it is nearly impossible to not fall in love with these two guys and their journey of a lifetime.

What Went Wrong?: Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response, by Bernard Lewis

For many centuries, the world of Islam was in the forefront of human achievement--the foremost military and economic power in the world, the leader in the arts and sciences of civilization. Christian Europe, a remote land beyond its northwestern frontier, was seen as an outer darkness of barbarism and unbelief from which there was nothing to learn or to fear. And then everything changed, as the previously despised West won victory after victory, first in the battlefield and the marketplace, then in almost every aspect of public and even private life.

In this intriguing volume, Bernard Lewis examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to understand why things had changed--how they had been overtaken, overshadowed, and to an increasing extent dominated by the West. Lewis provides a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil. He shows how the Middle East turned its attention to understanding European weaponry and military tactics, commerce and industry, government and diplomacy, education and culture. Lewis highlights the striking differences between the Western and Middle Eastern cultures from the 18th to the 20th centuries through thought-provoking comparisons of such things as Christianity and Islam, music and the arts, the position of women, secularism and the civil society, the clock and the calendar.

Hailed in The New York Times Book Review as "the doyen of Middle Eastern studies," Bernard Lewis is one of the West's foremost authorities on Islamic history and culture. In this striking volume, he offers an incisive look at the historical relationship between the Middle East and Europe.

Amazon.com Review
Bernard Lewis is the West's greatest historian and interpreter of the Near East. Books such as The Middle East and The Arabs in History are required reading for anybody who hopes to understand the region and its people. Now Lewis offers What Went Wrong?, a concise and timely survey of how Islamic civilization fell from worldwide leadership in almost every frontier of human knowledge five or six centuries ago to a "poor, weak, and ignorant" backwater that is today dominated by "shabby tyrannies ... modern only in their apparatus of repression and terror." He offers no easy answers, but does provide an engaging chronicle of the Arab encounter with Europe in all its military, economic, and cultural dimensions. The most dramatic reversal, he says, may have occurred in the sciences: "Those who had been disciples now became teachers; those who had been masters became pupils, often reluctant and resentful pupils." Today's Arab governments have blamed their plight on any number of external culprits, from Western imperialism to the Jews. Lewis believes they must instead commit to putting their own houses in order: "If the peoples of Middle East continue on their present path, the suicide bomber may become a metaphor for the whole region, and there will be no escape from a downward spiral of hate and spite, rage and self-pity, [and] poverty and oppression." Anybody who wants to understand the historical backdrop to September 11 would do well to look for it on these pages. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
In the fields of Islamic and Middle Eastern history, few people are as prominent and prolific as Lewis, emeritus professor at Princeton. This time around, however, he has written a book with an inconsistent argument and an erratic narrative consisting of recycled themes from his earlier books, a work that sheds no new light on Middle Eastern history or on the events of September 11. His general argument is that Islamic civilization, once flourishing and tolerant, has in modern times become stagnant. This, he contends, has led to considerable soul-searching among Muslims, who ask themselves, "What went wrong?" But while sometimes the author states that there is a critical inquiry into the source of economic weakness in Muslim civilizations, other times he says that, instead of looking into the mirror, Muslims have blamed their problems on Europeans or Jews and thus fed their sense of victimhood. In medieval times, Lewis notes, Muslim civilization transmitted scientific ideas into Europe. But after offering intriguing examples of Muslim physicians and astronomers on the cutting edge in the 13th to 15th centuries, this chapter abruptly ends by stating that in modern times the roles have reversed, leaving the reader baffled over what between the 15th and the 20th centuries may have contributed to this reversal. Thus, the book raises more questions than it answers. Furthermore, Lewis discounts the effects of various decisions made by European and American colonial powers that negatively impacted the development of a democratic political community and a viable economy in the Middle East. Lewis's earlier books, such as The Muslim Discovery of Europe and The Middle East and the West, are much more useful for anyone seeking to understand the historical dynamic between these two parts of the world. First serial to Atlantic Monthly.

From Library Journal
Since its inception in the seventh century, Islamic civilization has remained a significant force in the world. In fact, the Muslim world was a leader in the humanities, arts, and sciences while Europe was still in relative darkness and mired in internecine wars and religious zealotry. The Muslim world was also largely responsible for preserving and transmitting Greek and other Western scholarship to Christian Europe. However, Islamic civilization was eventually overshadowed by the achievements of European Christendom, and much of the Muslim world came under the direct or indirect domination of the West. In this highly readable book, eminent historian Lewis (Near Eastern studies, emeritus, Princeton Univ.) explains Islam's encounter with the West and the Middle East's varied responses to the West's sociocultural and political hegemony in the Muslim world. Like many of Lewis's previous writings on this subject (e.g., The Arabs in History), this book will undoubtedly generate significant debate and disagreement among scholars regarding the author's analysis of Islamic responses to modernity and Westernization. like Islamic warfare
By Billie Pritchett
Bernard Lewis's What Went Wrong? begins with the question "Why did Western countries advance in science, technology, trade, and other areas of social and economic life and Middle Eastern countries, especially those considered part of the Muslim world, did not?" Lewis then proceeds, throughout the bulk of the book, to address topics unrelated to the book's central question. The reader is treated to excursuses on warfare in the Muslim world, for example, and issues related to the Muslim world's reluctance to accept Westernization and technology and ideas and attitudes association with modernization, but not much in the way of a connection to pushing some thesis or other answering the question. Then, finally, in the conclusion of the book, Lewis returns to the central question, and feigns an answer. Lewis writes:

To a Western observer, schooled in the theory and practice of Western freedom, it is precisely the lack of freedom--freedom of the mind from constraint and indoctrination, to question and inquire and speak; freedom of the economy from corrupt and pervasive mismanagement; freedom of women from male oppression; freedom of citizens from tyranny--that underlies so many of the troubles of the Muslim world. But the road to democracy, as the Western experience amply demonstrates, is long and hard, full of pitfalls and obstacles.

I don't even necessarily disagree with the conclusion, but what is there in the way of argument that this is the correct position to assume? And is this Lewis's position? If so, why not have established it upfront as the thesis and then made the remainder of the book an argument and provided support for this thesis? Probably because this book was originally a series of lectures he had given that begin with some kind of topic, like Islamic warfare, for instance, and then each meander for 20 or so pages without a thesis.

Inconvenient Truths
By Jack Rice
If you are a cultural relativist, who arrogantly places yourself "above it all" in refusing to judge the values which inform the way people behave collectively, or if you buy into the big lie that "Islam means peace," and that anyone who questions this must be a bigot, then Bernard Lewis is of course your nemesis.

On the other hand, if you believe it's not a coincidence that most of the terrorism and barbarity occuring in the world today is committed by Muslims, then you will naturally wonder why. Something indeed went wrong, something happened, in the relationship of Muslims, particularly Arab Muslims, with the rest of the world.

Bernard Lewis is a scholar, not a polemicist. In What Went Wrong he clearly and with historical rigor illuminates the ebbing of Muslim conquest and the subsequent self-imposed isolation of Muslim cultural and intellectual life from the rest of the world. Their aggression turned inward, Muslims were left to seethe for centuries, the inevitable result's being the psychopathic, atavistic mindset, bursting forth in its ugly, murderous manifestations we see almost daily.

If you actually read Lewis rather than just react to an unflattering thesis, you will find his conclusions, if you are intellectually honest, to be powerful and compelling. Lewis's scholarly style doesn't make for a gripping narrative, but the book is short, and the effort to stay with it is rewarded by Lewis's insights.

I notice that those who attack Lewis don't attack his scholarship, only the conclusions he reaches. Historical obtuseness and intellectual dishonesty are hallmarks of these critics. As another reviewer has said, they are part of the problem.

Lewis does an intellectually honest job in this book of clearly identifying that which is presented as historical fact, i.e. quotes from original documents, dates of battles, trade and income figures, from the conclusions he draws from the facts. I have not read a review which faults his presentation of historical fact.
His conclusions are far from dogmatic. Lewis considers a number of factors that might account for the decline of the Islamic world, in each case, he discusses the strengths and weaknessese of each possible explanation.
Given that Lewis has been studying the Islamic world for longer than most of his readers have been alive, it is difficult to conclude that he is not qualified to draw historical conclusions. I find it interesting that only the Islamic world asserts that it cannot be understood by outsiders. The French don't claim that Americans cannot understand French history. The Chinese don't claim that only native Chinese speakers can understand Chinese history. If Lewis doesn't understand Islamic history then no one outside of Islam can or does.

Happiness: How to Achieve it (Illuminations), by Marcus Aurelius, Marcus Aurelius

Happiness by Marcus Aurelius encapsulates the thinking of a time-honoured expert. Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome from AD 161 until his death in AD 180, was patient, forgiving and peaceful by nature, but was forced to spend much of his reign at war. As a relief from his responsibilities, he wrote the Meditations to show how the moral life leads to tranquillity. With an introduction outlining his life and achievements, this entertaining selection of extracts presents his wisdom in an easily digestible form. Happiness will inform, delight and stimulate. In the quest for understanding and mastery of happiness, Marcus Aurelius is acknowledged as the supreme guide. 'As often as you see any man or woman do anything, say unto yourself: what is this person's underlying purpose in this action? But begin this course with yourself first of all and diligently examine yourself concerning whatsoever you do.'

PERHAPS THE SINGLE BEST BIOGRAPHY OF FREUD
By Steven H Propp
Peter Gay (born 1923) is Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University and former director of the New York Public Library's Center for Scholars and Writers; he has written other books such as The Enlightenment: The Rise of Modern Paganism, Weimar Culture: The Outsider as Insider, My German Question: Growing Up in Nazi Berlin, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1988 book, "As a historian, I have placed Freud and his work within their various environments: the psychiatric profession he subverted and revolutionized, the Austrian culture in which he was compelled to live as an unbelieving Jew and unconventional physician, the European society that underwent in his lifetime the appalling traumas of war and totalitarian dictatorship, and Western culture as a whole, a culture whose sense of itself he transformed out of all recognition, forever. I have written this book neither to flatter nor to denounce but to understand. In the text itself, I do not argue with anyone. I have taken positions on the contentious issues that continue to divide commentators on Freud and on psychoanalysis, but have not sketched the itinerary leading to my conclusions." (Pg. xix-xx)

Of Freud's "cocaine episode," he wrote, "It is the story of a great opportunity not grasped. Freud almost made a spectacular contribution to the practice of surgery... [Freud] hoped that cocaine might help his associate Ernst von Fleischl-Marxow, who was suffering from ... addiction to morphine... His impatience led Freud to hurry his researches... [Carl Koller eventually discovered its anaesthetic properties]... it rankled that he had missed by a hairsbreadth the royal road to fame... The misadventure remains one of the most troubling episodes in Freud's life. His dreams disclose an enduring preoccupation with cocaine and its consequences, and he continued to use it in modest quantities at least until the mid-1890s. No wonder he was intent on minimizing the effects of the affair upon him." (Pg. 43-45)

Of the break with Jung, he states, "Jung was chafing under Freud's authority, and... was not disposed to continue tolerating it much longer... On occasion Jung would adduce more intricate causes for his parting from Freud... Jung's most besetting disagreement with Freud... involved what he once called his inability to define libido---which meant, translated, that he was unwilling to accept Freud's definition. Jung steadily attempted to widen the meaning of Freud's term, to make it stand not just for sexual drives, but for a general mental energy." (Pg. 225-226) Later, he added, "The gulf dividing Freud and Jung on matters of substance was only widened by psychological conflicts between them. Taking deep satisfaction in his own developing psychology, Jung later asserted that he had not experienced his separation from Freud as an excommunication or an exile. It was a liberation for him." (Pg. 238)

He observes, "One question they did not resolve, did not even address, was that of just how many analytic patients went away cured. The question was then, and has remained since, a most controversial issue. But ... Freud and his closest adherents thought that ... the record of analytic successes compared favorably with the therapeutic efforts of their rivals." (Pg. 305) Gay notes that "Freud warily weighed rumors that he might be awarded the Nobel Prize [for physiology/medicine]... Freud wanted that honor very much; he would have welcomed the recognition and could have used the money." (Pg. 371)

He records, "[Freud] told Marie Bonaparte that he had been doing research into the 'feminine soul' for thirty years, with little to show for it. He asked... 'What does woman want?' This famous remark... is also a helpless shrug, a measure of his discontent with the gaps in his theory." (Pg. 501-502) He also notes, "[Freud's] analysis of this [adolescent] dream revealed... his boyish secret lust for his mother, a lust that set the most awesome religious taboos at defiance. Freud's mother was bound to be desirable to her son... in her handsome and obtrusive reality. She was by all accounts a formidable personage." (Pg. 504)

He states, "Freud left no doubt of HIS conviction that in [The Future of an Illusion] he was doing more than just pointing out interesting resemblances. Men invent gods, or passively accept the gods their culture imposes on them, precisely because they have grown up with such a god in their house. Like the fantasies of the child ... and on the model of such fantasies, religion is fundamentally an illusion---a childish illusion... To unmask religious ideas as illusions is not necessarily to deny them all validity. Freud emphatically distinguished between an illusion and a delusion; the former is defined not by its contents but by its sources." (Pg. 530-531)

Gay wrote toward the end of the book, "Early in 1937... His long paper, 'Analysis Terminable and Interminable' is his most disheartened pronouncement concerning the effectiveness of psychoanalysis... Freud had never been a therapeutic enthusiast. But now... he found new reasons for assigning the curative powers of psychoanalysis the most modest scope. He even declared that a successful analysis does not necessarily prevent the recurrence of a neurosis... Now he was writing as though the gains to the ego [through psychoanalysis] were at best temporary." (Pg. 615)

If one wanted to read only one modern biography of Freud, this would probably be the one. But it is even better supplemented with other, less conservative accounts [e.g., Freud, Biologist of the Mind; Freud: Darkness in the Midst of Vision; Freud and His Followers; Why Freud Was Wrong, etc.].

From the Publisher
A comprehensive applications-oriented treatment of the mechanical refrigeration cycle and associated equipment.

From the Back Cover

Principles of Refrigeration provides comprehensive coverage of refrigeration theory, components, and systems analysis and design. For both students and professionals, this book presents the science behind the operation of refrigeration systems as a method for building solid analytical skills, which will set the student/technician apart when it comes to understanding and troubleshooting system malfunctions, inefficiencies, and service requirements.

Key features of this edition:

  • The use of a dual system of units: the customary American system as well as the SI system.
  • The basic science of thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics, and applied physics has been expanded with better explanations and examples.
  • Fundamental principles are applied to the refrigeration cycles to show how changes in system variables are transferred throughout the system.
  • Many sections have been reorganized and rewritten to improve the development and flow of concepts. Longer chapters have been divided into more manageable units.
  • Much of the mathematics has been moved to the end of each chapter, in a section called "Optional Analysis."

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.

Principles of Refrigeration has been one of the foundation textbooks in the refrigeration field since Roy Dossat wrote the first edition in 1961. Through four additional editions, Mr. Dossat presented the fundamentals of refrigeration theory, components and systems to students who were preparing to enter an occupation rich with opportunities. I am honored that Mr. Dossat selected me to carry on his tradition of excellence by awarding me the opportunity to write the fifth edition of his textbook.

Having taught HVAC/R students at Ferris State University I have discovered the strengths and weaknesses that students have in developing the study habits and analytical skills they need to prepare themselves as successful technicians, technologists and engineers. I know from personal experience that if students graduate without the ability to build upon their educational experience, they will be limited in their advancement and opportunities. If an instructor can teach students how processes can be broken down into the fundamental principles, they will be able to correctly analyze and troubleshoot systems and processes that were not presented in a book or classroom activities. I have used this information, along with feedback from many faculty and graduates who used the previous editions of this book, as the basis for writing the fifth edition. The following paragraphs outline some of the significant changes in the text.

  • This book is intended for students of two- and four-year refrigeration programs who have previously completed a fundamental course in refrigeration systems. Although such a course is not a prerequisite, this edition was written to advance the student's knowledge of refrigeration systems by presenting more detailed information about the refrigeration cycle, component design and system operation than is normally found in an introductory text. The book presents the science behind the operation of systems as a method of building solid analytical skills that will raise the student above his or her peers when it comes to determining the cause of system malfunctions and inefficiencies and to selecting the best component to modify a system or replace a failed part.
  • The first eleven chapters of the book have been significantly enhanced. The thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanics and physics topics have been expanded. Rather than a review, these topics are now thoroughly explained in a manner that allows a student to comprehend the sciences related to refrigeration processes. The information develops the foundation needed to understand the underlying theory of refrigeration component and system operation. This part of the book may be a comprehensive review for students in programs where these subjects are taught as separate courses, but it is also an excellent presentation for those who use this book as the primary resource for this information.
  • All of the information presented in Parts 1 through 3 is used throughout the remainder of the text to explain how refrigeration components function. There is no esoteric or "nice-to-know" information presented in this section, so classroom time can be used more efficiently. The refrigeration cycles show how changes in system variables are transferred through the system. This information develops the reader's analytical skills.
  • The book presents the formulas, units and proofs that support the information presented in the chapters in Parts 2, 3 and 4. The mathematical material is intended to be a resource in developing the relationships that exist in the processes rather than as a mathematical exercise. These relationships will be applied throughout the remainder of the text; the formulas will not. The chapters can be just as effective in training a technician without the associated formulas, but they are there to show from whence the information presented in the chapter was derived. In support of this presentation method, all of the mathematics related to the chapter material is presented in the last section of the chapter labeled "Optional Analysis." This section can be skipped or assigned as extra credit material.
  • The formulas are presented in Inch-Pound and System International units. All variables are written with the appropriate units to show students how to properly approach problems by applying the fundamental relationships. This reduces the memorization of formulas and increases the understanding of the interrelationships between the sciences. The use of SI units also exposes students to the associated methods of measuring variables, so they become familiar with the information found on product literature and equipment nameplates. The formulas and examples are used to show relationships without making the book appear to be a engineering text.
  • Most of the topics in the 4th edition remain in this edition, although they have been reorganized to improve the flow of information. The entire book was rewritten using a style that is more closely related with books, manuals and other material read by today's students.
  • Some of the chapters that appeared too long have been split into two smaller chapters, so they are easier for the instructor to build lectures around and less intimidating to students. Each chapter also includes true-and-false questions along with multiple-choice questions to highlight the important information presented in the chapter.

Through these and other changes, I have taken a very important, comprehensive and effective resource and made it easier for both student and instructor to use and comprehend the information. Through the use of smaller sentences, fewer assumptions, more explanation and a logical presentation format, I believe I have succeeded in developing a new edition of the book that honors Mr. Dossat's intent to help those who have chosen the refrigeration field for their career. This edition will be more appealing to faculty who currently use the book and more inviting to those who are looking for a comprehensive textbook for their students.

In depth basics to complicated analysis of refrigation cycle
By debien@flash.net
In understanding the refrigeration cycle, Roy Dossat had 25 years in the field before teaching at the University of Houston. I was fortunate to attend the course taught by him in the 70's. It showed the man had much to offer even to the less experienced technician who needed to start on the basics. This book is easy to understand and a nice read for those who need answers to the complicated use of refrigerant and applications that drive the business. Refrigerant application is in constant change as environmental demands alter our lives. This book is a fundamental foundation and should be on the reference shelf of all engineers and technicians that want a straight foward understanding of the refrigeration cycle. debien@flash.net

A refrigeration Techs Must Have
By Baboon Boy
This book covers all the details! I use this book everyday as refrence material. It covers everything from the basics, but also gets into complicated 2 stage design, and other design areas. From A-Z this book has it. If you are a refrigeration Engineer/ Operator this is a must for the text collection.
