Authoritative, Exhaustive and Literary

I have recently inherited some family papers that include records of two relatives that died in the First World War. In an effort to discover more I have been researching their regimental histories and other sources of official records. Having found out the details of the actions in which they died, I wanted to read a general history of the war to get a better sense of perspective. Liddell Harts’ book was recommended to me by my Father. I was expecting a dry military history. What I found was a vibrant, in some cases, damning history of what must be one of the most horrific wars of all time. Liddell Harts style is grand and literary. His portraits of the key characters are rich and balanced. His deep knowledge of military strategy and first hand experience of the war makes his account credible. Add to this his impartial professional military eye and his compelling style and you have the best book of military history I have read. His willingness to point the finger of blame was startling and really drove home the horror of the war. His claim that the British command in charge or the second battle of Ypres should stand charges before the national for manslaughter was shocking both in the abstract and personally. For it was in this unsustainable defense of a weak position that one of my relatives died at Hill 60.

An excellent primer for reading on the First World War.

I have owned a copy of Liddell-Hart's History of the First World War for close to thirty-five years, having bought my copy during a visit to London's Imperial War Museum. Despite it once having been considered, in Britain, the standard work on WW1, I have to confess having got little satisfaction from it on my original reading. Only recently have I re-visited it for the first time in perhaps twenty-five years and found myself, at last, impressed with the scope of Liddell-Hart's writing. In particular I was impressed that Liddell-Hart does not focus totally on the Western Front but does also give adequate coverage to Eastern Front actions between Austro-Hungary and Russia, Allied actions against Turkey, and naval warfare. The only real shortcoming that irritates me is that a mere paragraph describes the Russian Revolution and the causes of the United States entry into war receives scarcely little more coverage. Nevertheless as a primer for additional reading on the conflict it is excellent.

Too gory for me, but I simply couldn't stop reading!

I read the first book of this series, The Reaper, and found it a bit too gritty for me. Too much blood and guts. However, it was one of those books that you simply can't stop reading. The Disciple, second in the series, is just as gory. And just as hard to put down. All in all, although both books were a bit gory for my taste, those who enjoy reading similar books to Silence of the Lamb will certainly enjoy this gory thriller.

I loved this book - intense

I loved this book - intense, complex and a quite bit twisty. I read The Reaper (to which this is the sequel) a long time ago and really enjoyed it; I then picked up the third book in the series without realising and recognised Damen Brook so had to go back to find this one and I am so glad I did! Absolutely brilliant, even better than The Reaper, although I think you'd probably have to have read that in order to get the most out of this one.
Damen Brook is becoming one of my favourite characters.

Changed my life

I think the title of the book is misleading. It makes it sound like it's about "how to find the perfect mate" crap in so many books out there.
It actually is about determining your needs, how to get them met (by others or yourself), how to set boundaries, and all of it changes your relationships with people. Work, personal, and romantic.

This book has truly helped me change my life and how I relate to everyone in it. In turn, I am more confident and not so "needy". In fact, I recommend it enough I gave it to my friends and I'm buying a new copy for myself!

My aunt had read another book of Talane's (Coach Yourself To Success), so when Talane came out with this book (The Secret Laws of Attraction: The Effortless Way to Get the Relationship You Want) and was having a book signing in our town (Washington, DC), Aunt Cathy offered to take me.

At the time, I was eye-rollingly uncertain about books with titles that involved the word SECRET or yet another book on relationships, but (despite the two heart-shaped candles on the cover) this particular book and its contents is remarkably different and honest. It is exactly my kind of book. I have recommended it (and Talane's other books) to so many others that I have lost count.

Rather than a book on "finding that perfect romantic relationship", which is just another way to focus on how you are lacking (a typical marketing tactic that I dislike), Talane's book talks about how we can find out about ourselves and our relationships with ourselves and everyone, with the idea of making life easier and more natural. To be our best.

I read this book all the way through, but then I've read it again and again, as each time, I was encountering different things in my life.

With the Emotional Needs Quiz, Talane gives you a tool to find out your top 4 Emotional Needs and suggestions on how to resolve them so that you can live your life at your best. With knowledge of your Emotional Needs, you really have a sharp idea of how you operate.

Talane offers terrific advice on Establishing Boundaries and even provides you with a Four-Step Boundary setting script, so that you have the words with which to be clear about your boundaries. I've used this with great success.

Then she talks about finding your Core Values. This helps you focus on what it is that really makes your eyes light up. You may already know all of these, and if you do, then that's terrific. If you don't, it's a very encouraging chapter. I did know what I liked and what my core values were, but I enjoyed the exercises because it gave me words to describe them. It just meant that when given a choice to make, sometime down the line, I used to these words as a checklist to make sure some, if not all, of them are involved.

As I've said, I've recommended this book to many of my friends, not just for the specific exercises to help, but as a way to help spark ideas, if they ever seemed to feel stuck in what they were doing.

I highly recommend this book. I highly recommend Talane and her world. Her wisdom has helped me in ways I cannot measure.

Totally disappointed.

I guess at my age I already know what my needs are and how to meet them. Maybe some people need help in that arena. This book didn't have much at all to do with the Law of Attraction IMHO. I thought the recommendations on having other people meet ones needs were fairly ridiculous. Have five people email you love notes once a week for eight weeks? Really? And what is that supposed to accomplish if you have to get five people to agree to come up with something to make you feel good about yourself? Made no sense to me. There are way better books out there than this one.

About the Author

Darrel Hess is professor of geography at City College of San Francisco, where he served as chair of the Earth Sciences department from 1995-2009. He regularly teaches physical geography, economic geography, and human geography. Hess received his B.A. in geography from UC Berkeley and his M.A. in geography from UCLA. Before grad school he served in the Peace Corps in Korea, and before teaching full-time he worked as a writer, photographer, and audiovisual producer.

Hess served as T.A. to Tom McKnight at UCLA, and began working with McKnight and Pearson as author of the SG starting in the 4th edition and as author for the LM starting in the 5th edition. He became a full time co-author of the 9th edition, and became sole author of the 10th edition.

�

Hess has contributed to the development of the geoscience animation library and has partnered with many geoscience teachers and writers in the development of the CA edition. Hess was the recipient of the 2014 AAG Gilbert Grosvenor Geographic Education Honors award.

Dennis Tasa has been a renowned illustrator of many bestselling geoscience textbooks since 1978, including Physical Geography by Darrel Hess, Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology by the American Geosciences Institute and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, as well as the physical geology, Earth science, and meteorology franchises by Tarbuck and Lutgens. He has created illustrations and media for the Mineralogical Society of America and NSF-funded projects. In addition to numerous educational Earth science apps, he has worked on various Earth science media, including Pearson’s GEODe.

In his spare time, Dennis has joined the Taos fine art community by painting under the direction of the artist in residence at one of Taos’ historic museums.

Tom L. McKnight taught geography at UCLA from 1956 to 1993. He received his bachelor’s degree in geology from Southern Methodist University in 1949, his master’s degree in geography from the University of Colorado in 1951, and his Ph.D. in geography and meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in 1955. During his long academic career, Tom served as chair of the UCLA Department of Geography from 1978 to 1983, and was director of the University of California Education Abroad Program in Australia from 1984 to 1985. Passionate about furthering the discipline of geography, he helped establish the UCLA/Community College Geography Alliance and generously funded awards for both undergraduate and graduate geography students. His many honors include the California Geographical Society’s Outstanding Educator Award in 1988, and the honorary rank of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement from UCLA. In addition to Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation, his other college textbooks include The Regional Geography of the United States and Canada; Oceania: The Geography of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands; and Introduction to Geography, with Edward F. Bergman. Tom passed away in 2004.

Useable But Disappointing Quality

It's a textbook rental so, I wasn't expecting top quality, even slightly worn would have warranted an o.k. review. But the spine is cracked and the middle section of the book is falling out. Thankfully the pages are glossy, and I suspect water resistant otherwise they might have been damaged too. I really need this textbook for this week so, I feel kind of locked into keeping it around. I usually carry my books in my bag all semester, but this is one class that I'm going to have to rely more on notes and doing the readings at night, which is kind of an inconvenience as a student because I don't think this thing will stay together unless I leave it on my desk at home.

I've included photos so you can see what I'm talking about.

As far as textbooks go, this one is pretty good. It's very through, maybe a little too much. We didn't use the book a lot, but it proved a valuable resource when I needed clarity on lecture topic.

This book is easy to read and has great pictures. The best part though is the fact that is has links that can be scanned with your smartphone to videos. It really helps break up the monotony of reading plus helps visual learners like myself grasp some confusing concepts.

Next to the Bible itself, Sacred Marriage has been more helpful to me than any other book I've ever read -- and I've read a lot! I've read way too many of what my sister calls "Suck it up, Sweetie" books -- you know, the ones that tell you that if you make menu plans, get the laundry done regularly and have sex at your husband's every whim you will have a wonderful marriage. Those books are more discouraging than anything else, and I believe they cause more harm than good.

Gary's book isn't like that. It hleps you to focus on the true goal - not how to have a wonderful marriage, but how to how to have a wonderful relationship with God, no matter what your marriage is like. Of course, I've found that following the biblical principals in this book, my marriage is much more satisfying -- even though nothing much has changed other than my own heart and my own focus.

Thank you, Gary, for writing a no-nonsense book that simply gives us the message of the Bible in relevant ways. The principals in this book not only apply to marriage, but to every aspect of life. I highly recommend it! (I've already worn out 5 copies and have given out at least that many to others.)

We just used this for a group study along with the accompanying DVD's, all by Gary Thomas. An excellent study and wonderful guide for any couple who desires to improve their relationship!
