Parted by death. Tethered by love. Lainey Bloom’s high school senior year is a complete disaster. The popular clique, led by mean girl Wynter Woods, bullies her constantly. The principal threatens not to let her graduate with the class of 1997 unless she completes a major research project. And everyone blames her for the death of Wynter’s boyfriend, Danny Obregon. Danny, a gorgeous musician, stole Lainey’s heart when he stole a kiss at a concert. But a week later, he was run down on a dangerous stretch of road. When he dies in her arms, she fears she’ll never know if he really would have broken up with Wynter to be with her. Then his ghost shows up, begging her to solve his murder. Horrified by the dismal fate that awaits him if he never crosses over, Lainey seeks the dark truth amidst small town secrets, family strife, and divided loyalties. But every step she takes toward discovering what really happened the night Danny died pulls her further away from the beautiful boy she can never touch again.

Great read!
By Alissa K Berzen
I am normally not a fan of YA fiction, or even the supernatural genre-- but this novel was seriously impossible for me to put down. I must have read it in record time because the story just held my attention so well. I am a pop culture junkie, and as a fellow 90s teen (Class of '98 here) all of the 'period references' had me hooked-- music, TV, fashion, tech, even some of the slang totally had me transported back to that time. It definitely left me wanting more!

Haunting, romantic, suspenseful YA set in 1996
By Jill Ratzan
High school senior Lainey never expected to be blamed when the body of fellow senior Danny Obregon was found in the woods one summer night in 1996. She certainly never expected that Danny's ghost would return to the small town Ash, or would ask her to discover the true identity of his murderer. Sure, Danny and Lainey bonded over their mutual love of grunge music, but wasn't he dating the snobbish Wynter - Lainey's best friend's twin sister? Now Lainey and Danny are racing against a clock to solve a small-town mystery . . . forcing Lainey to balance her supernatural love life with school, family, a part-time job, and a high-stakes Spanish project that threatens to eclipse even the most persistent of ghostly visitors.

Enough clues are provided for the clever reader to figure out who killed Danny (and why), but they're well-hidden, making readers guess along with Lainey. The characters are relatable, the plotting is sharp, and the romance is palpable - but what truly stands out about Grunge Gods is its atmospheric setting. The woods and graveyards of Ash are exactly the sort of spooky places spirits from another world might congregate, and debut author Kimberly G. Giarratano peppers Lainey and Danny's story with the technology, fashion, and soundtrack of 1996: historical fiction for today's teens, nostalgia for thirtysomethings.

Giarratano knows the landscape of YA lit, and her haunting, romantic, suspenseful historical novel will be a hit with readers who loved The Caged Graves by Dianne Salerni or In The Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters. I look forward to more to come from this talented new voice in YA fiction.

Captivating YA mystery!
By KA Mac
Lainey Bloom has typical teenage problems to deal with: bullies and boys, grades and an unsympathetic principal. Until she witnesses her boyfriend, Danny's, murder. Now Lainey is spending her senior year trying to figure out who killed him. The kids at school think she's responsible, her dad is MIA, and even her friends are flaking out on her. As Lainey puts the pieces of Danny's dearth together, it becomes increasingly clear that someone does not want the truth uncovered.

I could not put this book down! Giarratano is a master at ramping up the tension. Every character has their own agenda, and its nearly impossible to figure out who Lainey can trust, and who's hiding something, or out to get her. Yes, there is a paranormal element, but the ghost story is touching and beautifully done -- never cheesy or over the top. I would call this an expertly plotted YA mystery. Highly recommend!

The mineralogists 'bible'
By J. Delaney
The student edition of Deer Howie and Zussman is the most important mineralogy book that geology students should have in their collection. It provides information that not only helps while learning mineralogy, but becomes an essential and much consulted reference in later years. By limiting itself to the rock forming minerals it provides the solid information for learning real-world mineralogy without the trivial frills. This is the most consulted book on my bookshelf.

An Introduction to the Rock Forming Minerals
By VM
An great book. I have the 13th impression of this book published in 1982. We used this book in second year mineralogy and found it very useful not only in mineraology but throughout the remaining years of our geology program at University. The book is easy to use and has all the different groups, ortho- ring silicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, framework silicates and non silicates and provides information pertaining to properties, crystal structure, chemistry and paragenesis.

A must if you study minerals
By A Customer
This book is an absolute must for anyone working with minerals in any way. Beeing an introduction to rockforming minerals it is very conprehensive. It is very valuable not only as a textbook but also as a handbook in the lab. As the title says it covers the rockforming minerals so dont expect to find exotic minearls. You can though expect to find a relatively detailed introduction to the most important minerals. It far surpasses any student minaralogy to my knowledge.

Review
"It's a great book. The content is solid and the explanations are clear." —Language Surfer blog

"While these particular Tuttle textbooks are suitable for, and typically used in, classroom settings, including in some of the best universities in North America, they can also serve as an excellent out-of-class reference tool and can very well complement formal language classes or other study materials for the self-learner." —Lingholic blog

"Lessons in this book cover basic grammar, reinforcing instruction through dialogue and exercises and presenting common scenarios where typical everyday language would be applied. The result is a top pick for any do-it-yourselfer who would learn Tagalog and actually apply it to a visit to the Philippines." —Midwest Book Review

up-to-date language and great explanations
By Sam Delchamps
I'm learning Tagalog on my own. My wife, a Manila native, is available to answer questions and be my practice partner. I've tried 4-5 books over the years, and so far this is my favorite.

I don't want lengthy notes about grammar theory, but I do like explanations. A lot of modern language books take the approach where they expose you to the language and let you figure out the grammar on your own. Me? Just tell me what I need to know and I'll take it from there. What I was finding in Tagalog was two kinds of books, ones written a long time ago that had some good grammar explanations but were a little out of date and new ones with up-to-date content but without much structure.

This book seems to have both. The language in it is right up to date, so when I try something out on my wife she doesn't go "that's correct but we never say that any more", and there's enough, but not too much, grammar. I was also glad that the lessons weren't just about traveling in the Philippines and site-seeing. I got the workbook with the textbook and was surprised how much I used it.

My only advice to the publisher would be to slow down the audio in the first unit or two. Even though I've been exposed to a lot of Tagalog, I wasn't quite ready for full-speed speech in chapter 1. On the whole, this is a graet addition to the Tagalog language.

Practical textbook with real world applications
By Cyril Chen
I am reviewing copies of the hardcover textbook and the supplementary workbook. The textbook also comes with a CD of audio files that provide listening familiarity.

The content is organized well. Starting with an overview, in each unit there is a vocabulary list and sample dialogue, then short activities to reinforce comprehension. Perhaps the activities are too short, but successfully completing them encourages the learner to continue. The grammar sections are concise and the terminology may be too academic for some, but remember that this is a textbook and not a quick language guide for tourists.

The workbook provides more comprehensive activities per unit than the textbook, and these activities focus the learner on the topic from different angles: match Tagalog words with English; fill in the blanks in Tagalog sentences with missing words and phrases; re-write questions as sentences, and vice versa; edit sentences to be grammatically correct; reading comprehension; transcribe the audio; translate English into Tagalog.

The balance between reading and listening is helpful because, as a learner without an instructor, I know my ability to read Tagalog would quickly surpass my listening (and speaking).

Very appealing is the selection of vocabulary, allowing the learner to engage in real world conversation and not sound like a walking textbook. Having a native speaker as learning partner would help, to answer questions about usage. A few times I wondered if the vocabulary list examples actually corresponded with their appearance in the dialogues--or was I reading typos?

The cultural notes are important, as knowing how native Tagalog speakers think will enrich learning the language by understanding its context. The Roman alphabet, and words of Spanish origin, also contribute.

Informative & helpful
By Andrew KB
This textbook is great for introductory learners. We used it in my intensive Tagalog class. I found that the exercises, examples, and notes in the book are really helpful for learning. There are many, many examples so it's easy to follow along. The explanations are very fluid as well, so when I was studying on my own, it was easier to understand. When learning a foreign language, especially one so grammatically different from English like Tagalog, it is crucial that you can understand the structures and apply them to real situations. Tagalog sentence structure can be difficult initially, but the exercises and examples help to ease that difficulty. The cultural notes are very helpful as well. Filipino culture, as with any culture, has many important customs that one needs to be aware of especially when speaking to others. There are many instances when you can easily make a cultural faux pas without trying, but the book aims to inform you on a cultural level as well. The problem with many Tagalog textbooks these days is that they are outdated. However, this book is an excellent, updated source that you know is relevant to today's Filipino society and Filipinos.

Review
"...Jerry's book gives an accurate and honest depiction of how democracy can and does work in education..." -- Isaac Graves, 16-year-old homeschooler and alumnus of the Free School (Albany, NY)

"This is a delight to read, full of insights drawn from real life..." -- John Taylor Gatto, former New York State and New York City Teacher of the Year Award and Bestselling Author of Dumbing Us Down, and The Underground History of American Education

"the one book you need in order to know everything there is to be known about kids and schooling..." -- Mary Leue, founder, Albany Free School, SKOLE, Paths of Learning, Journal of Family Life

From the Publisher
Jerry Mintz, director of AERO and a world-wide authority on alternative education, has spent most of his life promoting learner-centered education and the empowerment of children. In his book, No Homework and Recess All Day: How to Have Freedom and Democracy in Education, Jerry draws on his long experience as director of a democratic school and also on his intimate relationship with democratic schools around the world to give an overview of this growing movement. If you've ever thought of attending a democratic school, enrolling your child in a democratic or alternative school, starting a democratic school, helping your school become more democratic, or teaching your child at home, then this is the book for you.

From the Inside Flap
"This is a delight to read, full of insights drawn from real life. Jerry Mintz's broad experience with other ways to organize the scholastic part of growing up is unique."
--John Taylor Gatto, former New York State and New York City Teacher of the Year Award and Bestselling Author of Dumbing Us Down, and The Underground History of American Education

"Finally, the one book you need in order to know everything there is to be known about kids and schooling. Told in simple, straightforward language, this eminently readable, admirably short book has finally been published!

The contents are drawn from numerous talks made by Jerry after many years of dedicated work running his school, publishing an almanac and a newsletter to help families, teachers and kids locate schools for themselves, visiting schools and attending conferences all over the world.

This is unquestionably THE BOOK for families and kids who want to get right down to the rock bottom truths that all kids know about learning - and "learning" in school! Too many people with too many vested interests have been fudging it or obscuring it for much too long! Read it from cover to cover!"
--Mary Leue, founder, Albany Free School, SKOLE, Paths of Learning, Journal of Family Life

"As one who has experienced democracy in education first hand, I feel Jerry's book gives an accurate and honest depiction of how democracy can and does work in education. Through real life experiences, not lofty theories that are so often thrown around about education, he shows how a learner-centered approach to education is not only a method, but also a necessary attribute to all healthy, caring, and effective learning environments. This is a truly wonderful book that I will suggest to people over and over again."
--Isaac Graves, 16-year-old homeschooler and alumnus of the Free School (Albany, NY)

"A remarkable book about a remarkable life's work. The book is clear and easy to read, with wonderful stories. An ideal primer for anyone interested in education, commitment, service. It's a gem."
--Svetlana A. Sussman, Harris Sussman, Ph.D.

"I picked up this book and didn't want to put it down Jerry is an excellent storyteller - and it is packed with extremely important and insightful material. I found myself underlining and highlighting often. a must read for people already involved in democratic education, for those thinking of getting into it, or for those who just want to learn about it!

There are many powerful passages or commentaries, but I can tell you one of my favorites: Jerry said that at Shaker Mountain they had no budget for travel. He said that if they had had a limited budget they would have had limits on where they could travel to, but because they had no budget at all they therefore had no limits!!

If it were up to me I'd make this mandatory reading for every parent and every educator! Simple and profound!"
--Roger Dennis, Public School teacher

The more I think about this book, The more ...
By Jason Preston
The more I think about this book, The more astonished I am at how few schools actually give children any real democratic power in democracies that depend on the development of that skill for the perpetuation of their system. Reading this book gave me confidence in the methods, and valuable leads on where I can turn for more information.

EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She's even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life--as she sees it--is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

UNTIL TODAY
And then she sees something shocking. It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough. Now everything's changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2015: Intersecting, overlapping, not-quite-what-they-seem lives. Jealousies and betrayals and wounded hearts. A haunting unease that clutches and won’t let go. All this and more helps propel Paula Hawkins’s addictive debut into a new stratum of the psychological thriller genre. At times, I couldn’t help but think: Hitchcockian. From the opening line, the reader knows what they’re in for: “She’s buried beneath a silver birch tree, down towards the old train tracks…” But Hawkins teases out the mystery with a veteran’s finesse. The “girl on the train” is Rachel, who commutes into London and back each day, rolling past the backyard of a happy-looking couple she names Jess and Jason. Then one day Rachel sees “Jess” kissing another man. The day after that, Jess goes missing. The story is told from three character’s not-to-be-trusted perspectives: Rachel, who mourns the loss of her former life with the help of canned gin and tonics; Megan (aka Jess); and Anna, Rachel’s ex-husband’s wife, who happens to be Jess/Megan’s neighbor. Rachel’s voyeuristic yearning for the seemingly idyllic life of Jess and Jason lures her closer and closer to the investigation into Jess/Megan’s disappearance, and closer to a deeper understanding of who she really is. And who she isn’t. This is a book to be devoured. -Neal Thompson

Review
“The Girl on the Train has more fun with unreliable narration than any chiller since Gone Girl. . . .The Girl on the Train is liable to draw a large, bedazzled readership too. . . . The Girl on the Train is full of back-stabbing, none of it literal.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“The Girl on the Train marries movie noir with novelistic trickery. . . hang on tight. You'll be surprised by what horrors lurk around the bend.”—USA Today

“Like its train, the story blasts through the stagnation of these lives in suburban London and the reader cannot help but turn pages. . . . The welcome echoes of Rear Windowthroughout the story and its propulsive narrative make The Girl on the Train an absorbing read.”—The Boston Globe

“[The Girl on the Train] pulls off a thriller's toughest trick: carefully assembling everything we think we know, until it reveals the one thing we didn't see coming."—Entertainment Weekly

“Gone Girl fans will devour this psychological thriller. . . . Hawkins’s debut ends with a twist that no one—least of all its victims—could have seen coming.”—People

“Given the number of titles that are declared to be 'the next' of a bestseller . . . book fans have every right to be wary. But Paula Hawkins’ novel The Girl on the Train just might have earned the title of 'the next Gone Girl.”—Christian Science Monitor

“Hawkins’s taut story roars along at the pace of, well, a high-speed train. …Hawkins delivers a smart, searing thriller that offers readers a 360-degree view of lust, love, marriage and divorce.”—Good Housekeeping

“There’s nothing like a possible murder to take the humdrum out of your daily commute.”—Cosmopolitan

"Paula Hawkins has come up with an ingenious slant on the currently fashionable amnesia thriller. . . . Hawkins juggles perspectives and timescales with great skill, and considerable suspense builds up along with empathy for an unusual central character."—TheGuardian

“Paula Hawkins deftly imbues her debut psychological thriller with inventive twists and a shocking denouement. … Hawkins delivers an original debut that keeps the exciting momentum of The Girl on the Traingoing until the last page.”—Denver Post

“The novel is at its best in the moment of maximum confusion, when neither the reader nor the narrators know what is occurring” –The Financial Times

“This fresh take on Hitchcock’s Rear Windowis getting raves and will likely be one of the biggest debuts of the year.”—Omaha World-Herald

“Hawkins’s tale of love, regret, violence and forgetting is an engrossing psychological thriller with plenty of surprises. . . . The novel gets harder and harder to put down as the story screeches toward its unexpected ending.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“A gripping, down-the-rabbit-hole thriller.”—Entertainment Weekly Hotlist

“The Thriller So Engrossing, You'll Pray for Snow: Send in the blizzards, because nothing as mundane as work, school or walking the dog should distract you from this debut thriller. A natural fit for fans of Gone Girl-style unreliable narrators and twisty, fast-moving plots, The Girl on the Train will have you racing through the pages."—Oprah.com

“It's difficult to say too much more about the plot of The Girl on the Train; like all thrillers, it's best for readers to dive in spoiler-free. This is a debut novel—Hawkins is a journalist by training—but it doesn't read like the work of someone new to suspense. The novel is perfectly paced, from its arresting beginning to its twist ending; it's not an easy book to put down. . . . . What really makes The Girl on the Train such a gripping novel is Hawkins' remarkable understanding of the limits of human knowledge, and the degree to which memory and imagination can become confused.”—NPR.org

“[L]ike Gone Girl, Hawkins's book is a highly addictive novel about a lonely divorcee who gets caught up in the disappearance of a woman whom she had been surreptitiously watching. And beyond the Gone Girl comparisons, this book has legs of its own.”—GQ.com

“Paula Hawkins’ thriller is a shocking ride.” –US Weekly
“An ex-wife indulges her voyeuristic tendencies in Paula Hawkins’s film-ready The Girl on the Train. In the post-Gone Girl era, crimes of love aren’t determined by body counts or broken hearts, but by who controls the story line.” –Vogue

“The Girl on the Train [is] a harrowing new suspense novel…a complex and thoroughly chilling psychological thriller… The Girl on the Train is one of those books where you can’t wait — yet almost can’t bear — to turn the page. It’s a stunning novel of dread.” –New York Daily News

“The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins is a psychologically gripping debut that delivers.” –The Missourian

“The Girl on the Trainis the kind of slippery, thrilling read that only comes around every few years (seeGone Girl).” –BookPage

“Hawkins, a former journalist, is a witty, sharp writer with a gift for creating complex female characters.” –Cleveland Plain Dealer

“The Girl on the Train is as tautly constructed as Gone Girl or A.S.A. Harrison's The Silent Wife, and has something more: a main character who is all screwed up but sympathetic nonetheless. Broken, but dear. . . . No matter how well it's written, a suspense novel can fall apart in the last pages, with an overly contrived or unbelievable ending. Here, The Girl on the Train shines, with its mystery resolved by a left-field plot twist that works, followed, surprisingly, by what you might call a happy ending.”—Newsday

“I’m calling it now: The Girl on the Train is the next Gone Girl. Paula Hawkins’s highly anticipated debut novel is a dark, gripping thriller with the shocking ending you crave in a noir-ish mystery.” –Bustle

“Rachel takes the same train into London every day, daydreaming about the lives of the occupants in the homes she passes. But when she sees something unsettling from her window one morning, it sets in motion a chilling series of events that make her question whom she can really trust.”—Woman’s Day

“Hawkins’s debut novel is a tangle of unreliable narrators, but what will have readers talking is her deft handling of twists and turns and her eerily fine-tuned narrative. This is one creepy, dark thriller. . . . The book is smartly paced and delightfully complex. Just when it seems Hawkins is leading us one way, Rachel, Anna, or Megan change the game. Nothing can be taken for granted in The Girl on the Train, not even the account of the girl herself.”—Las Vegas Weekly

"Psychologically astute debut . . . The surprise-packed narratives hurtle toward a stunning climax, horrifying as a train wreck and just as riveting."—Publishers Weekly(starred review)

“[A] chilling, assured debut. . . . Even the most astute readers will be in for a shock as Hawkins slowly unspools the facts, exposing the harsh realities of love and obsession's inescapable links to violence.”—Kirkus(starred review)

“intricate, multilayered psychological suspense debut, from a staggered timeline and three distinct female narrators. Rachel, who is unabashed in her darker instincts, anchors the narrative. Readers will fear, pity, sympathize and root for her, though she's not always understandable or trustworthy. . . . En route to a terrorizing and twisted conclusion, all three women—and the men with whom they share their lives—are forced to dismantle their delusions about others and themselves, their choices and their respective relationships.”—Shelf Awareness

"This month we're gearing up for Paula Hawkins's mysteryThe Girl on the Train. Its three narrators keep readers guessing as they try to suss out who's behind one character's shocking disappearance. Can you figure out who did it before they do?"—Martha Stewart Living

“Hawkins keeps the tension ratcheted high in this thoroughly engrossing tale of intersecting strangers and intimate betrayals. Kept me guessing until the very end.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of the Detective D. D. Warren series

“I simply could not put it down.”—Tess Gerritsen, New York Times–bestselling author of the Rizzoli and Isles series

“Gripping, enthralling—a top-notch thriller and a compulsive read.”—S. J. Watson, New York Times–bestselling author of Before I Go to Sleep

“Artfully crafted and utterly riveting. The Girl on the Train’s clever structure and expert pacing will keep you perched on the edge of your seat, but it’s Hawkins’s deft, empathetic characterization that will leave you pondering this harrowing, thought-provoking story about the power of memory and the danger of envy.”—Kimberly McCreight, New York Times–bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia

What's the fuss?
By P. McGraw
It IS a page turner. You can read this book in one day, two at the most, and the plot drives the whole book. The unreliable narrators (there are two besides the main character) are as unlikable as they are unreliable, and there isn't a nice male in the book. Entirely plot driven; the characters are paper thin. You can figure out who-dunnit by the middle of the book. The ending is weak. I can't imagine what all the fuss is about, except that it is quick and there are lots of twists and turns, and you can't trust anyone to tell the truth.

ALCOHOLIC AMNESIA
By Red Rock Bookworm
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN is a dark, haunting and depressing psychological thriller, but it's incredibly effective thanks to the writing skills of author Paula Hawkins. Rachel is a divorced woman who would do anything for a drink, and like a lot of folks consumed by a love affair with the bottle, one might call her a victim of circumstances. Her husband Tom had an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. He divorced Rachel, married the "other woman" and now all three (husband, wife and child) are happily ensconced in the house that was once Rachel's.

The train that Rachel rides to London each day takes her past her old neighborhood. From the window of the train she observes not only her old garden that backs up to the tracks, but also the daily activities of another couple who reside down the street from her previous home. In her imagination she has given the couple names and has created a fairy tale love life for them. Real life, however, cannot live up to her fantasy and the couple does not have the picture perfect relationship that Rachel has concocted. When a murder occurs, Rachel becomes entangled in the investigation because of what she has witnessed on her daily commute.

This rather bleak story with intersecting timelines is told from the viewpoint of three different women Rachel, Anne and Megan. All the women are unreliable narrators with something to hide. In fact, most of the characters in this novel, including the men, lack veracity, and are a self-serving and unsympathetic group with plenty of skeletons in their closets.

Lest I continue and divulge too much of the plot, let me just say that the twists and turns in the story are many and readers will be easily drawn in, making it easy to devour this book in one afternoon.

Baffled by Its Success
By blondewriter99
I think I would ordinarily cut this book more of a break because it is fast-paced - Hawkins wastes zero time describing anything that doesn't have to do with exactly what is going on in the moment - and while that doesn't make her a great writer, there is absolutely nothing here that will transcend, or reverberate within you long after you've finished reading - it at least doesn't bog you down with preciousness. But because the book has received so many rave reviews - I have to judge it more harshly because it just isn't deserved. This is serviceable writing at best - about the level you'd read on Fiction Press - about the level you would get from a first year MFA student. If someone is digging around in something, they are 'scrabbling' (over and over). The lead character's blackouts are along the lines of: "I couldn't remember. It was all dark. All black. All cloudy. Couldn't remember." I'm making that up, but it's not significantly different. So, that's the writing, let's get to the plot.

The book is told from the POV of three different female characters, none of them compelling in the slightest. We're supposed to care deeply that a woman who chronically cheats on her husband disappears. I really didn't care that she did, frankly. Then we're supposed to care that Rachel, who drinks too much on the train while she pretends to commute to a job she doesn't have and obsesses about her ex-husband and her 'barren womb', may or may not have witnessed a crime. I didn't care about Rachel, didn't care about the woman who'd gone MIA. Now let's get to the third character you can't care about - Anna. I don't even remember her place in the story I cared about her so little. Oh, right, she's the woman who is responsible for the breakdown of Rachel's marriage and is now married to Rachel's ex, Tom.

As others have noted, the three female characters have little to discern them from each other, and speak in a nearly identical voice - except one of them drinks. All three lament about men - constantly. They seem to have no other life interests - not one has a hobby, a job, or anything compelling her forward from day to day that doesn't have to do with a guy. (The guys all turn out to be jerks.)

I suppose people like this do exist, I'm just not sure why I'm supposed to care about them - or why anyone else did, or how this book got to be so popular. I've heard it was compared to Gone Girl but other than both having a missing woman at the core, and 'Girl' in the title, there seems to be no comparison whatsoever.

The 'twist' isn't a twist in the slightest, just the reveal of the missing woman's murderer, and it's exactly who, about three-fourths of the way through (and I'm not good at guessing twists), you suspect it is. Then the 'reveal' is the guy confessing he did it in a speech you'd hear some cartoonish villain give in a super hero movie or soap opera. That kind of 'Bwahahaha I did it!' thing. Very convenient.

But I guess the biggest thing that bothered me was that the entire crux of the story is based on the idea that Rachel has an alcoholic blackout - and the author explains (twice) that when you are having an alcoholic blackout, your brain does not create memories - so there is nothing to 'remember'- but then lo and behold she suddenly has a memory breakthrough, and solves the crime. I thought she wouldn't have been creating memories? It's as if the author wrote half her book, then decided to do some research (googling) and when she found research that blatantly contradicted the plot point her book hinges on, decided "Oh, what the heck, I'll keep writing" and then decided to INCLUDE her research. And her editor didn't notice or (more likely) didn't care.

A couple of other things an editor (if this book had one) should have picked up on: Much is made of a pile of clothes by the train tracks - so much so that the book opens with a description of them - the importance of the clothes? None. Zip. Zero. And there's a red haired man who keeps popping up - muttering esoteric things - we assume he will be integral to the mystery. Nope, he just disappears.

Other stuff I could complain about but it would be spoilery. It seems if books are bought by book clubs, they become huge sellers, no matter how evisceratingly terrible (witness 50 Shades of Grey).

Here's one thing I admire the author for: She wrote this book in four months (it shows) and it became a HUGE bestseller. Awesome for her. So few authors ever make it to that level - even with stunningly well-written books - so kudos to her for whatever alchemy happened to guarantee she's got some money to retire on.
