Best Primary Source Since The Patton Papers

_Normandy to Victory: The War Diary of General Courtney H. Hodges and the First US Army_ will no doubt be acclaimed as the best primary source contribution since Martin Blumenson's two-volume _The Patton Papers_. This daily log kept by Lt. Gen. Courtney H. Hodges' aide Major William Sylvan (& Capt. Francis G. Smith Jr.), is often noted as the Sylvan diary in countless histories from D-Day to VE-Day. From numerous volumes in the US Army official history in World War II (commonly called "The Green Books"), to seminal carvings by well known ETO historians like Martin Blumenson, Charles B. MacDonald, and Russell F. Weigley, the Sylvan diary has been indispensible for gaining insight into the operations of First US Army. Now, John T. Greenwood has transcribed and painstakingly edited this monumental source into book form, for serious researchers and interested readers alike. .

The original copy of the Sylvan diary is housed at the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas, with photo-copy versions at US Army Military History Institute at Carlisle, PA, and National Archives and records Administration (NARA) II at College Park, Maryland. Locating the latter copy versions has, at times, frustrated researchers when staff at Carlisle claims only NARA has it, and vice-versa.

Greenwood has done a marvelous job editing the Sylvan diary. In the Introduction, he states that the diary is "in edited form" but he is unclear if any portions have been edited out. The daily entries start on June 2, 1944 and end on May 7, 1945, indicating that it is most likely intact. He has arranged the daily logs into topical chapters covering every major campaign from D-Day, the breakout from Normandy, The Huertgen Forest, The Battle of the Bulge, the Remagen Bridge crossings of the Rhine River to the link-up with the Russian forces. Army headquarters were kept informed of the big picture of events taking place outside their sphere of operations, so news of Operations MARKET-GARDEN and The landings in southern France (ANVIL-DRAGOON), among others are also injected. As with all HQ documents the entries are often concise and cover the daily operations of corps, division, and sometimes regiments throughout the entire drive of First Army across Europe. The logs also give insight to Hodges daily activities, command style, and a full range of problems confronting an Army headquarters in the field. Surprisingly, in spite of the choppiness of the original writing style, the dairy entries are quite readable. Within the text, Greenwood corrects misspelled words and when only an individual's last name was used, provides the person's military rank and full name in brackets alongside the original. In copious endnotes, he adds factual information for clarity and a biographical sketch of nearly every person mentioned in the diary, but purposely leaves out opinions, arguments, historical debates and controversies. This tendency to provide only the facts, gives the biographical sketches a dull encyclopedia entry flavor which spills over into the short biography of Courtney H. Hodges that opens the book.

The book itself is handsomely bound utilizing high quality paper. There are about 298 pages of diary and with intro, Hodges bio, notes, bibliography, and index total about 575 pages. A few West Point style maps of the major campaigns and a high glossy photo section containing many photographs not usually seen in other ETO histories rounds out the book.

Military historians have long been aware that the role of General Hodges has remained hidden in the shadows of more flamboyant commanders like General Patton and British Field Marshal Montgomery. The accomplishments of First Army are certainly undeservingly over-shadowed by that of Patton's famous Third Army. This slanted view is beginning to change. In _A Command Post at War: First Army Headquarters in Europe 1943-1945_, David W. Hogan Jr. (2000) relies heavily on the Sylvan diary in his well researched tome. Now, thanks to John T. Greenwood the Sylvan diary and the role of Hodges and his First Army will reach a wider audience and the verdict of history may be overturned. The significance of this volume cannot be overstressed. Very highly recommended.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in reading a detailed account of how General Hodges directed the actions of the U S First Army.The First Army landed in Normandy, liberated Paris, first to cross the Rhine and meet the Russians It is not an combat action story but a daily report on the General's meetings conferences. He was in action everyday not sitting behind a desk.
I bought the book because my Air Force unit the Ninth Tactical Air Command provided air support to the First Army and because I exchanged greetings with the General one day.I enjoyed reading the book as I experienced what he was writing about.I served in the U S Army from 1942 to 1945.

I was a little disappointed about the book

I was a little disappointed about the book. It does not provide any inside information on the high level conferences, nor does it deal much with General Hodges' tactics and strategies. It does give details of the movements of the units, and we do get a picture about which generals are the more competent ones.

That's why Patricia Wells's updated guide, now in its fourth edition, is a hit. With detailed information on 450 restaurants, Wells takes readers by the hand and demystifies the culture so well known for its luscious food and demanding gourmands. Sidebars abound: she dissects breads, foie gras, and oysters--and even gives the cultural background on why the French may drink wine in the morning (to kill worms, of course), as well as discussing the pros and cons of eating the rinds of cheeses. If you take just one book to Paris, this is the one to pack

As I consider "Food Lovers Guide to Paris" an old friend, I was really pleased to see a timely update to one of the most useful travel books I know. I highly recommend it to anyone with a good appetite who is contemplating a visit to the City of Light.
In this fourth version of her classic, Ms Wells again does a superb job of ferreting out and reviewing top notch restaurants, cafes, bakeries, pastry shops, wine bars, candy makers, markets, and a myriad of specialty shops - anything and everything that has to do with food in the food capital of the world. Some notable names from the third edition have been dropped and some exciting new ones added.
Some restaurants have been in all four guides, but an update was certainly necessary for those who enjoy the finest of fine cuisine: three years ago, the celebrated superstar chef Joel Robuchon retired. Today, several of his talented former assistants are now running their own kitchens in Paris, and their food can be absolutely stunning. My girlfriend and I visited two of these restaurants last autumn, (during the wild mushroom season, of course!), and were blown away by the exquisite food at both establishments.
Those looking for dining bargains will not be disappointed, as a good many of the recommended restaurants are not only quite affordable, but also offer wonderful value for your money. Good food, simply but imaginatively prepared. Included amongst the latter are several wonderful regional restaurants, if, for instance, you would like to try some of the specialties of the Southwest or Provence.
As there are other serious restaurant guides available, perhaps the most uniquely useful chapters in the book are those devoted to specialty shops. Whether you are looking for fresh truffles, old cookbooks, designer china, or the most specialized and esoteric of cookware, using this book you will be able to find it.
As another reviewer pointed out that the book features a number of recipes (I think the reviewer was peeved by this), I thought I would add my two cents: every recipe I have tried from other editions of this book has been at least very good; some have been superb.

Good guide for food lovers

This is the only guide that I brought with me to Paris for my 2 months stay there. Here's what I like about this book:
1. The food dictionary on the back! Eventhough I can speak/write/read some French that I don't need to carry regular dictionary around, the food terms sometimes confusing and this book has an excellent section on it.
2. The recipes are worth trying. I tried her recipes for madeleine and financiers, both turned out excellent.
3. Ms. Wells not only give restaurant guides but also specialty shops, bakery, etc. Some of the recommendations are well secluded from mainstream tourists. A trully excellent find.
Here's what I don't like about this book:
1. Many of the restaurants featured are expensive, especially for 2 months stay in Paris. I think there's plenty of cheap and reasonably good food that I could find. I used Ms. Well's recommendation for weekends/special occasions.
2. I think this book is a bit too heavy/thick to carry around.

Perhaps Too Generous

Although I find her engaging, I have to admit my experience with Patricia Wells' guide books and recipes has been less than foolproof. Although this book contains a wealth of useful details, in my experience she is far too generous with many mediocre restaurants and I have had several meals I considered downright bad based on this book. Perhaps a part of the problem is that, unlike most restaurant reviewers, Ms. Wells is well-known and well-recognized among Parisian proprietors. She loves them, they love her. As a result, I suspect the service - and in some cases the food - are often a notch or so better for her than for the average patron.

Kalasha is a language spoken by three thousand speakers in the three Kalash Valleys of Bumboret, Birir and Rumbur in Chitral, Pakistan. Those people have been reported to all be converted to Islam, but they still speak Kalasha in their homes. Gul Sharakat who has been conducting her own research by interviewing Kalasha speakers throughout Pakistan estimates there are fifteen thousand Kalasha speakers altogether. It is known that Kalasha is an old language, definitely two thousand years old and probably four thousand years old. Georg Morgenstierne says in his books that Kalasha has been spoken “for thousands of years.” Morgenstierne describes them as “among the first wave of Indo-Aryan Immigrants”. Rudyard Kipling wrote in “The Man Who Would Be King” “These women are whiter than you or me. . . . It's a mountainous country, and the women of those parts are very beautiful." These people are said to be descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great.

About the Author
Georg Morgenstierne was a Norwegian Linguist, one of the last of the old school of Linguists. He was associated with the University of Oslo in Norway and today there is Georg Morgenstierne's house in his honor located at Blindernveien 31, entr. From Moltke Moes vei. Morgenstierne was born in 2 January 1892 in Oslo, Norway. In 1924, he undertook the first of his two major linguistic expeditions. He arrived in Kabul with a personal letter of introduction to King Amanullah of Afghanistan from the King of Norway for permission to conduct his linguistic researches. The importance of this letter cannot be underestimated. Afghans have long been paranoid, xenophobic and suspicious of outsiders. An adventurer who undertakes to travel into the remote tribal areas of Afghanistan has virtually guaranteed himself a short life. King Amanullah had prisoners brought from the jails of Kabul to Morgenstierne so that he could interview them and learn about their languages. In this way he was able to learn about many languages spoken in Afghanistan plus he was able to learn about the Khowar Language which was spoken in Chitral on what is now the Pakistan side of the border. In 1929, Morgenstierne wished to return to Kabul to continue his research but he could not do so because by then King Amanullah had been overthrown. Therefore, Morgenstierne went to what is now the Pakistan side of the border after which he wrote another book, Report on a Linguistic Mission to North-Western India ISBN 0923891145. Morgenstierne took extensive notes and after these two visits he spent the next nearly 50 years of his life studying his notes and researching the languages he had studied there. Morgenstierne died in Oslo on 3 March 1978 with a manuscript in Khowar on his desk that he had been researching at the time of his death.

They couldn t find a reader-friendly comprehensive book that explained the mechanics of addiction, family dynamics of addiction, and how they could assist rather than enabling the addict. Basically, what I had to work with was of no interest to the people who needed the help. With 2 million people entering inpatient substance abuse treatment yearly and millions suffering without knowledge of their illness, I decided I had to create my own. I have graduated with a Master s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) 2008 from the University of Michigan with a 4.0 avg. Read this book!

This guy knows what he is talking about. You can tell hes battled addiction himself and isn't trying to feed you bs. There is a LOT of information in this book, but it isn't your typical regurgitated academic information. The way this book is written makes it entertaining and easy to read. He's blunt and not afraid to offend when giving you his perspective. I gotta respect that. The treatment center stereotypes are hilarious. This book isn't claiming you don't need support groups, rather, the opposite. The goal seems to be awareness, experience, strength and hope. I wish I had this book 8 years ago. Add it to your arsenal on the road to recovery.

A violent story about cruel people

This is a riveting tale set in the Everglades swamp, where some of the human dwellers rival the alligators for sheer cruelty. The story is so well told I read it all at one sitting. It is certainly a violent story, so don't even think about reading it if that bothers you. There is enough black humor involved to keep you from descending into depression from the violence, but I doubt that you will be laughing. It is certainly a good read!

Mayhem and murder in the Everglades

In Wildlife, the latest horror thriller by Jeff Menapace, the setting was the Florida Everglades, where two families - the Daigles and the Roys - carried on a modern-day Hatfield-McCoy kind of feud. It was harmless enough until a self-serving lie by young Travis Roy triggered a deadly chain of events that would involve not only the two families, but also another family, the Burks, who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. And as if murder wasn't gruesome enough, the victims' bodies were disposed of quickly by hungry gators.

I thought it would be tough to match the intensity of the author's Bad Games series, or the gruesomeness of Hair of the Bitch, but Wildlife succeeded with its horrifying story of the Burk family's desperate attempts to survive against both human and animal predators in one of the most hostile environments imaginable.

It's another winner by one of the top horror writers in America.

Menapace has done it again. This was a fun and fast read. Yes, I'm developing a serious case of "kindle thumb" after this one. Action-packed, harrowing jolt of swamp malevolence. Not as psychological as Bad Games, (we don't really get as close a peek into the twisted psyche of the psycho and his witchy mom) but lots of entertainment to be sure. Looking forward to what he will write next.

Wonderland manual is a cultural version of the NATO Cold War strategy of ‘flexible response’. Pursuing the military analogy, the manual is a continuation by other means of what Wonderland has been doing for the past years: accelerating the exchange of information among young architects in Europe. The Wonderland manual differs from other architecture books in that it is not about architecture but about architects, not about the work that architects produce but about how they produce it. It is first and foremost a guide containing facts and figures, tips and experiences and as such can be seen as a handbook for European architects at the start of their careers. Wonderland manual reveals a remarkable commitment to sharing knowledge and experience without any self-interest. While such altruism may not be typical of the entire generation of young architects, it does characterize a considerable portion of it, and most certainly those who have worked in front of and behind the scenes on this book. This young generation is the first to reach adulthood in a Europe without the Iron Curtain. It is also the generation which, despite all the political, economic and cultural complexities of this new Europe, was the first to develop a European mind-set and, in many cases, to lead a border-hopping European lifestyle. It is also the first generation for whom Europe is not an abstraction, not merely a symbol of regulations and bureaucracy, but a self-evident fact, and an equally self-evident field of activity.

Wonderland - plattform for european architecture is a network for young European architectural offices, which was founded in 2002 in Austria. It is an architectural think-tank that explores the professional, economic, and social aspects of being an architect, which are discussed in the wonderland magazine, at wonderland symposiums and in wonderland exhibitions. The network's aim is to foster the exchange of information on typical architectural work processes and daily professional practice across national borders. Since its foundation wonderland has been continuously extended its network with a widespread program of activities all over Europe. Today, wonderland includes over 50 member teams from 11 European countries.
