Deferrari's edition (1964) of The Seven Books of History Against the Pagans

Paulus Orosius (c. 385-c. 418) was a parish priest, historian, and follower of St. Augustine. Most likely he was born in Bracara (a point open to much debate) in the Roman province of Hispania. He was well educated in Christian and Pagan literature and also had "attained a strong grasp of Christian principles and had won a general reputation as one well grounded in the faith." Orosius fled his homeland c. 415 because of Barbarian invaders and met up with St. Augustine in North Africa. In 415 Orosius journeyed to Palestine on a mission to St. Jerome where Orosius entered into fray against the Pelagian heresy raging at that time. When he returned to North Africa and St. Augustine he began his famous work, The Seven Books of History Against the Pagans and soon afterwards no mention of him can be found (he probably died).
Orosius' Seven Books of History Against the Pagans follows the theme of At. Augustine's third book of his famous tome, City of God. In this part Augustine discussed how the Pagans had caused the horrors experienced by world (famine, pestilence, war, pillage, massacres etc - the list is endless considering the dire straights experienced by the Late Roman Empire). However, St. Augustine had only cited examples earlier examples from the Roman Empire and not after Christ's birth. He asked Orosius to carry on this theme using events during Christ's life to the present day. Orosius describes the entire geography of the world (nice fold out map included), the horrors of the pre-Christ world, and how the noble "traits of human natured" were reinforced by the coming of Christ against those with evil characteristics (Nero and other persecutors of the Christians). Orosius' concludes that "God had guided its course through a succession of empires to its culmination in the Roman Empire and now, with the gradual fall of the Roman Empire, had come the triumph of the Church". His work is meant to be apologetic. Orosius planned on following up this work with more substantial evidence but he died in 418.
During the medieval period Seven Books of History Against the Pagans was very well known (extensive citations occur almost whenever there is a description of Nero) and medieval chroniclers often cite entire passages. For example, the 12th century political philosopher John of Salisbury in his Policraticus used word for word the description of Emperor Nero. The Anglo-Saxon King Alfred made a translation into Old English of Orosius' work and it was also influential to Dante. This is a wonderfully interesting book and hopefully it becomes more available online to anyone interested in late Antiquity and even Medieval History because of its influence.
The introduction to this "newer" edition of The Seven Books of History against the pagans adds nothing to the existing edition by Raymond (1936). The introduction is shorter and provides less information. However, the translation is on the whole clearer (a discussion of the changes made to the Raymond edition would have been helpful). The introduction does include some bare bone points on Orosius' career, examination of Orosius' extensive sources, the central ideas of his book, and the author's historical method. If possible track down the older edition of this fascinating primary source.
