One textbook I ENJOYED reading

This book is very current and covers topic including where prices come from, the economics of healthcare, unemployment and inflation, international trade, money, banks and the federal reserve. With this being an election year, all of this is information everyone should have.

The questions were very thought provoking and often led to additional reading of articles in the NY Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The Motley Fool, etc.

I learned a lot from this book and was fortunate to be able to reference it for my sociology class! I will not resell this book as it is a great reference for someone like me just getting started in finance and economics.

Amazon fixed their gaff...

I bought this bundle hoping to sell the book back when I was done with this summer session class.

When I clicked the sell us your item back for a gift card button the ISBN number on my book did not match the book in the page's description. I contacted amazon and they were amazing about it. They gave me 3 different options on how to best fix the problem.

Ultimately, Amazon took the book back and refunded me my entire purchase price for the book. I will continue to do all of my books shopping/renting thru Amazon. Thank you Amazon for stepping up and providing A1 customer service.

This book is very simple, concise and to the point. I think the authors wrote it with the college student in mind. Economics may not be the easiest to understand but this book really does a good job in example the key principles of macroeconomics. They also use examples throughout the text that really help put things into perspective in the real world. Definitely a must have!

"The Wellness Mindset" is a valuable book that combines a wealth of nutritional wisdom with a variety of other recommendations for wellness. Although I've been educating myself about healthy eating for decades, this book opened my eyes to quite a few things I wasn't aware of before. Tracy Kay has really done her homework, and the evidence is in the credible and respectable sources she cites as well as her own return to health.

In addition to the nutritional particulars, I also appreciated her messages about self-value, self-care, and exercise as well as the extremely important information she offers about how to choose health-care advisors who will support true healing and wellness. I'm glad I bought this book!

I have life-threatening blood blots in my lungs and in my legs. My body has to destroy the blood clots and absorb them: that's the only way to get rid of them. I's pretty obvious that my body needs all the help it can get! I heard about Tracy's book from a friend. I read in a couple hours. It's plainly written by an ordinary person who is walking the walk; not by a professional who is only talking the talk. I am incorporating Tracy's ideas into my life at my own pace. It is definitely helping me help myself. By the way, Tracy has a Facebook page. I sent her a message and she got back to me. Nice woman who really does care.

"History doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme."

"Only Yesterday" has a feel of a modern day writer that climbed into a time machine, traveled back to 1919, lived 10 years in New York, then wrote this book while living in 1929. I expected to drudge through some outdated language, and have to look up items and names that were relevant at the time. What I got was an amazing glimpse into an era that I knew surprisingly little about.

Frederick Lewis Allen had a tremendous knack for picking details that would be relevant almost 100 years later. From the price of basic staple, the the daily routine of the average couple, down to how they start their automobile. Mr. Allen then recaps the politics of the times, moral attitudes, prohibition, "Yes, We Have No Bananas", corruption, foreign affairs, radio, and culminating in a view of the stock market crash of 1929 that proved many of my pre-conceived notions incorrect.

While there is a certain dryness in the early discussion of the politics of the time (no pun intended), everything else draws you in. This was a book that I found very difficult to put down, and intend to go back for another reading, while looking up some of the less familiar references as I go.

The bottom line is that much of the story of the 1920s relates very closely to the events of today. Living wage, gender equality, moral attitudes, stock and real estate speculation are all discussed. And by merely changing a couple of dates and shifting a decimal place here or there, could Mr. Allen be discussing the modern world.

I'm eager to begin Since Yesterday: The 1930s in America, September 3, 1929-September 3, 1939, which currently awaits me on my Kindle.

A wonderfully written book covering the years 1919-1929. It was written in 1930 and published in 1931. It gives a detailed account of the changing social mores, political movements, rich vs. poor elements, race relations and everything that made the 1920's in America such a decade of upheaval.

Allen, the author was a renowned writer for Harpers magazine the the Atlantic Monthly. His nearness to the decade that had just passed gave him incredible insight into the changing society.

He provides plenty of details and background on social morality, the Teapot Dome scandal, labor unrest, Prohibition, high finance and all the popular plays, authors and the new "moving pictures".

It is well written and he is known for "inventing" this style of historical nonfiction writing much as David McCoullough does today. Rather than a history book (as was the norm then), Allen weaves the events of the day into a story that shows cause and effect.

He closes his book, predictably by the time of it publishing in 1930. He had NO IDEA , as he speculated into the future just how deep the Depression would go and the breadth of the apocalypse that would erupt in Europe 5 years later when Hitler took power. He did write a follow up book covering the 1930's.

I highly recommend this book. I got it as a daily deal for $1.99.

I love that this was written just after the 1920's by ...

I love that this was written just after the 1920's by an educated journalist who lived it. This book shows how history repeats itself. People think the problems of today are new...they're not...for example, did you know Wall Street was bombed once? On the trading floor? But yet we think of bomb threats as being a new idea because of terrorists. How quickly we forget history. And the rush up to the stock market crash? There were economists warning about it for so long but their cries were ignored. And the idea of easy credit available for mortgages and the run to buy houses to re-sell at higher values? That's not new...that happened in Florida during 1928. And people's homes were foreclosed and they lost...just like in 2009. The book is well-written, I appreciate the author's wit and knowledge of the decade. It gets a little long-winded in some areas but that is excusable. The writing helps you imagine a general idea of what the decade was like to live through and not necessarily from one political viewpoint or another.

This book is for you if: 1) you're wondering why your family has fallen away from the Faith or 2) you've come back to the Church and it's a wreck and looks nothing like the Church you remember from childhood.
I had heard bits and pieces of what happened in the Catholic Church since the 60's, but this book pulls it all together.
Very easy to read. I bought two copies- one for myself and one to pass around my family.

PRISM Workbook

I am Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Miami, Florida, and I have been using this workbook for years. I have used it with juvenile delinquents, sex offenders, and domestic violence offenders. It is an excellent way to engage resistant clients and incorporate goals and measure successful treatment completion. I have also used it with families who need to learn to communicate and with stress management. I use it when teaching graduate counseling classes. The chapter on Active Listening is is a practical way to teach person-centered therapy and gives the students a chance to role play.

This workbook does an outstanding job of creating and organizing, innovative, multi-modal groups for working on Social Skills with troubled youth. It incorporates hands on activities, role-plays, and ends each group with a guided relaxation exercise. A great approach for reaching children with various degrees of abilities and different learning styles.

A humane and well-rounded introduction

My reaction has been quite opposite that of the other reviewer. While this is not the only Persian textbook you'll ever need, it is just right for someone new to the language. I find that this course covers a lot of material and is clearly written, engaging, and well paced. Previous to this course I was using Thackston's "An Introduction to Persian," and I completed over half of his course before finally giving up in favor of Living Language's.

While Thackston was intelligible and comprehensive, the book's bare-bones, disconnected presentation leaves much to be desired. You'll learn grammatical concepts and little else. There is no dialog, no cultural or contextual information, only a handful of rote exercises, and a fairly useless set of vocabulary. There is almost no chance to practice or review what you've learned. Complicated constructions are consigned to explanations of a few terse and highly technical sentences. His explanations are more akin to those of a reference grammar than an introductory course. After assiduously working through the bulk of the book, I found myself more suited to parse verbs than to read or speak any Persian. I would probably recommend his book for those interested in reading Persian for academic reasons, or possibly as a follow-up to an actual introductory course like this one.

Living Language's course was a pleasant contrast. Suddenly, I was 1) given interesting dialog; 2) introduced to useful and relevant vocabulary; 3) taught the key grammatical concepts in a clear and logical manner; 4) given many opportunities to practice what I've learned in a variety of contexts; 5) provided with a variety of cultural highlights and insights.

The grammar explanations are excellent, albeit too quickly paced at times. I'm at a loss as to why another reviewer bemoans the presentation of the verb. Yes, the author likes to provide more explanation than a stark conjugation chart. The conjugations are there, but they are introduced in helpful and logical ways.

For example, Thackston adopts the traditional approach: first, he presents the infinitive (eg. raftan, "to go"), then demonstrates (I won't say "teaches") how to derive the past stem (raft) by dropping the infinitive ending (-an). He then demonstrates how the past tense is formed by the addition of person/number endings (raftam "I went", rafti "you went"... etc.) He doesn't introduce the present tense (which has a separate verbal stem) until almost half-way through the book!

In contrast, Living Language introduces the uses of the verb in a rational order, starting with the various forms of the present tense and proceeding to the past tenses, future, etc. This way is much more natural. I'm not sure what anyone could find objectionable about this presentation.

As for the complaint that the inclusion of colloquial usage is somehow inaccurate and confusing, I did not find it this way. Instead, it is characterized by a few predictable rules, and it was instructive to see how the formal grammar translates into daily speech. When colloquial speech is being used in the book, it is marked as such, and the more formal written variant is presented. If there are any inaccuracies, I would ask critics to refer to them specifically.

This course includes six CDs: three to accompany the book and three to use at any time. The dialogs are delivered at a reasonable pace and provide good practice. The two narrators, a man and a woman, do a good job, although I often found that the woman enunciates words more clearly. The "at home" CDs are audio of the Persian in each chapter; the "on-the-go" ones provide a four or five handy drills for each chapter, starting with a short dialog and then prompting you to create or alter sentences.

My main complaint that the chapters contain too much content; namely several grammatical concepts and several vocabulary lists. I think the book would be better if it were divided into more chapters (from 15 to maybe 20 or 25) with smaller portions of grammar and vocabulary. Also, vocabulary is introduced that is not used in the chapter's dialog or exercises, something that I find frustrating.

A final caveat: I learned to read and write the Persian alphabet before this course, so I did not have a chance to evaluate its presentation in this book. All of the Persian script in this book is accompanied by a phonetic transcription, but I would recommend that any beginner spend some time learning the fundamentals of reading and writing. My suggestion is write out the alphabet in full as many times as you can stomach, repeating the sound/name of each letter out loud as you do so.

Overall, I find Living Language's Farsi to be a solid and interesting introduction to Persian.

Confusing and Convoluted- but Better than Nothing!

As anyone who has tried to learn Farsi knows, finding a good Farsi textbook is impossible- because there isn't one! Some quality textbooks have come out of Iran, but the level of English in those books is low, making them intimidating for people who are not yet comfortable with holding something from Iran. The government made some courses back in the 60s which are available for free, but they don't have audio. Yale University Press also published a course, but the audio component is extremely inadequate.

Honestly, you will not be able to find a better book than this one in terms of overall quality of production. The audio component of the book is well worth the cost of the entire package, since finding quality, transcribed Farsi conversations is almost impossible.

With that said, it is a sad compliment to pay. The book is littered with errors. The Tehrani pronunciation of "-un" for "-an" is frequent and irregularly scattered throughout the book with no explanation- often in parentheses beside the formal Dari pronunciation. The colloquial, spoken versions of verbs are incorrectly listed in the tables.

In addition, this book is impossible for beginners to understand. The first conversation is a complete conversation in fluent Farsi, instead of the usual "hello, how are you" we expect in language courses. It jumps right in, using compound verbs, the plural "ishun" form for 3rd person singular, multiple verb tenses, and turns of phrase which are not explained in the vocabulary- all in the first lesson! HA! It's laughable.

I recommend John Mace's classic introduction to Modern Persian as the real "course book" with which one learns Farsi. Get an old copy from the 1980s and work through some of the grammar. When you have worked through a few chapters of John Mace, order this course to work on your pronunciation. However, don't expect to learn any grammar from this poorly organized, error-ridden, scatter brained book. I think of it as a vocabulary builder and fluency trainer. One of my exercises in working through it is to find the errors on each page and correct them, and also to try to figure out the complicated speech patterns used in each lesson which are left unexplained.

Also...this might be me but...why did they get the Irani version of Barry White to be the male voice? The female voice is also not very welcoming. I have heard Persians sound very nice and open, and the language sounds like French when spoken rapidly. Maybe the audio needed to be "scary" sounding for political reasons...anyway, that's just a conspiracy theory.

As I said in the title, it's confusing and convoluted, but the audio element beats every alternative by almost 2 stars!

A Course That Is Off Course

I have reviewed and studied at least half a dozen Farsi textbooks. Had I not had this experience, I might have put this textbook down after one or two lessons in frustration. Introduction and practice in reading the Farsi (Arabic) alphabet are inadequate. No indication on how to write it is given which one needs to do using this textbook. The explanations regarding colloquial usage versus formal usage are weak at best and the "rules" sometimes applied incorrectly. Writing in the colloquial style serves only to confuse the beginner. The description of the verb in Lesson 4 turns a system which is simple and elegant into something confusing and convoluted. That really needs to be reworked in a more traditional and clearer vein because it doesn't work and will send the student down the wrong path. The introduction of vocabulary in the Key Phrases which isn't used and then the use of vocabulary in the dialogues which isn't introduced is just wrong. I've only gotten through the first four lessons, but felt I needed to say something now. My advice: Look and at Mace for clarity, accuracy, and succintness and Bashiri for an Iranian view of the grammar and try again.

Compared to the "Dummies" book, this one knocks it out of the park. Visually compelling and well-organized. Love this book.

I am a visual learner. If you don't know what that means, it means that you learn by seeing something vs. having it explained to you. So if I'm sitting in a meeting at work and they are talking about a concept, I don't really start to understand it until I it up on a screen, or if I write it down as they are talking about it. Make sense? So if you're like me, you might want to try this book.

I am learning Wordpress right now and have several books..... I bought the Dummies Wordpress book and frankly have been pretty frustrated by it. It's text-intensive and whenever I look up something in the index, it's not there. On top of that, even though it says it's for websites and not blogs, there are still more references to blogs since the author is a big blogger and this seems to be where her preferences lie. I'm going into that book because I'm assuming if you're looking for Wordpress beginners books that's one you might be considering.

So as far as this book goes....

WOW. This is what it must have been like in the 1960s when TV's went from black / white to color. This book is all-color, glossy, with lots of color pictures to help you understand the Wordpress interfaces. Each page is extremely easy to understand... and while it's presented in a visually compelling manner, it's not for "dummies" but instead walks you through setting up hosting and building your Wordpress site. There are lots of "tips" boxes with potential questions for each topic.

A good example is the "Understand Plugins" section on page 206.... it is organized in easy to read text boxes (almost like a website, fancy that!) and walks you through the paragraph-length topics: What is a plugin? Free vs. Paid. Make your own... etc. The next page then tells you how to find plugins and walks you through the exact screens on Wordpress (with photos!!).... then the tips section for plug ins includes a question I have had: "Some plugins have a warning that they have not been updated in over two years. Should I be worried?" The one-sentence answer recommends that yes, you either update the plugin or find one that's been created more recently to take advantage of the latest changes to Wordpress.

This book is so much better than the Dummies book...I am thinking of returning that one frankly. I love this book and wish I would have had it two weeks ago when I first started learning Wordpress. It's not too basic like some Wordpress books I've bought, and it's not too jargon-filled and cluttered (like the Dummies book) and it is so well-organized and easy to find info in.... each page even has a bar with the chapter (on the right page) and the topic (on the left page) so you can flip through the book and quickly find what you're looking for.

I can't rave about this book (as a newbie) enough and would recommend it to anyone starting a Wordpress site (blog or visual site) for the first time. This book knocks it out of the park and after writing this review I'm going to go see if there's a part 2 companion book for more advanced topics like SEO optimization.

An excellent way to learn how to use WordPress for basic blog building

The “Teach Yourself VISUALLY” series has seen considerable improvement since its initial offerings. This volume on the basics of using WordPress is a solid example of the maturation of the series.

First, WordPress Is a tremendously capable and versatile web publishing platform. It can be used to create relative simple blogs, as shown here, to very sophisticated websites. The more sophisticated features are not demonstrated here.

Instead, the reader is presented with a step-by-step illustrated tutorial on WordPress, many of its features and how to create and manage a feature laden blog.

The writing is clear and the visual style is great.

For the beginner who wants a through, albeit basic, education on how to use WordPress, I would recommend this book.

Excellent book for those starting out on Wordpress

The first 60% of this book is devoted to those hosting their site on WordPress.com, installing WordPress on that platform, and the focus is mainly on a site whose primary purpose is blogging. I'm doing none of that, so at that point in the book I felt I had wasted my money on this book. However, from that point forward the book changed gears and gave me a lot of great information that will be valuable to me. It was well laid out too. So I'm still giving it 5 stars.
