About the Author
Professor of English at Central Washington University, Loretta Gray has three degrees related to her interest in composition and applied linguistics: Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (School for International Training), Master of Arts in Spanish (Middlebury College), and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (Boston University). She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. In addition, she taught Spanish at Clemson University and applied linguistics at the School for International Training. Dr. Gray has been teaching composition and applied linguistics courses at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1992. She also is co-author of the textbook RHETORICAL GRAMMAR.

Fascinating exploration of how to achieve various rhetorical effects by making different grammatical choices

For many people, grammar is a dry, boring subject with pedantic rules and arcane terms that seem far removed from everyday language. In this textbook and reference guide, the authors demonstrate how the thoughtful and creative use of grammar can help a writer to achieve a variety of interesting, memorable, provocative and persuasive effects. In thirteen chapters, the authors discuss various ways of using grammatical choices to construct, modify, and improve sentences and phrases, and make thoughtful word choices that can help a writer to communicate more effectively.
The Preface indicates the book is intended for students in composition classes, but beginning writers and writers unfamiliar with modern or classical rhetoric could find this book challenging and somewhat difficult to follow. Although the book is written for students in composition classes, a non-student interested in learning different ways to develop and improve his or her writing could find it a useful reference guide.
Readers interested in this book should also consider taking a look at Jeanne Fahnestock, Rhetorical Style: The Uses of Language in Persuasion and Sister Miriam Joseph, Shakespeare's Use of the Arts of Language.

Riddled with Errors

This book is riddled with errors. Towards the end, in the style chapter, my class found an entire concept where every example was completely contradictory to the definition. The style of the book makes it very readable, but these errors are shameful because they are not merely typos (though there are some of those) but mistakes that interfere with basic understanding of the concepts it is trying to teach.

Not Bad; Not Great.

This was a required text for a class called "The English Language". To be fair, we did not read the entire book -- only about half of the chapters.
The writing is clear and easy to understand, but it is dry and dull to read. The goal of the book is to help you make better use of the language. I suspect if you can stay awake and focused long enough, the book might succeed in its goal.
Be sure to be up on all your grammar terminology before diving in. It will help you understand sentences like these in the "reminder" sections of each chapter:
"Have I set off metadiscourse markers with commas where an emphasis on the marker would be useful?"
or
"Have I used the there-transformation and cleft sentences effectively--but not too frequently?"
If you're not having to use this book for a class, I'd pass. If you're looking for help with basic grammar, this isn't it -- this is grammar on an advanced level.
I generally keep school books for reference, but I'm happily giving this one to the library.
