About the Author

Agn�s B�nassy-Qu�r� is the Director of the CEPII, the French leading research institute in international economics, and a Professor at University Paris-Ouest (on leave). She is a member of France's Commission Economique de la Nation and also teaches at Ecole Polytechnique. Her research interests focus on the international monetary system and European macroeconomic policy.

Benoit Coeur� teaches international economics and economic policy at �cole polytechnique in Paris. He has served in various official positions in the French government including as the CEO of France's debt management office, Agence France Tr�sor and as France's deputy deputy to the G-7 and G-20. He has also been the co-President of the Paris Club. Beno�t Coeur� has authored articles and books on economic policy, the international monetary system and the economics of European integration.

Since January 2002, Pierre Jacquet has been executive director (in charge of strategy) and chief economist at the French Development Agency (AFD). He was formerly deputy director of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) and chief editor of IFRI's quarterly review Politique Etrang�re. He is professor of international economics and chairman of the department of economics and finance at the Ecole des Ponts-ParisTech and a guest professor in executive programs at the French business school INSEAD. His fields of interest include globalization, international monetary and financial issues, trade policies and negotiations, economic policy and development.

Jean Pisani-Ferry is the Director of Bruegel, the Brussels-based economic think tank, and a professor of economics with Universit� Paris-Dauphine. He has had a career in research and policy, both in France and at European level. He has been Executive President of the French PM's Council of Economic Analysis, Senior Economic Adviser to the French Minister of Finance, Director of CEPII, the French institute for international economics, and Economic Adviser with the European Commission. He has a regular column in Le Monde and Handelsblatt.

Great purchase

I am new to the field of economics, and I usually don't like to take the road everyone else takes, I prefer reaching things indirectly.
Instead of buying Mankiw, etc., and those s***ty books, this was a great choice.

This book exists, not in an abstract plane void of any prescriptive and explanatory power, but at the intersection of the State and the domestic economy.

I highly recommend it.

Poorly written book

Poorly written case studies. This book is difficult to follow though its different looks at case studies. It jumps around chronologically, makes up fake scenarios, and depicts dialog between project workers and managers that are unrealistic and awkward. The author did not stick to a single style throughout the book so each case study takes at least two read throughs to understand what the hell it its talking about. I bought the book for a PM Class and everyone thinks it is a GARBAGE book. Glad I only spent $10 on it. Might be able to make use of it as packaging material when I move.

Incomplete: Contact WIley for Instructor's Guide

For full use, you need to request the Instructor's Manual from the publisher - Wiley. WIthout it, all of these case studies are incomplete. The book does not provide answers to questions posed. Unfortunately, after attempts to gain use for my class, I was unsuccessful (even after working with Wiley via email directly). Very disappointed. Otherwise, the case studies seemed like they could be helpful, though most are in the realm of manufacturing/construction not newer project areas of software or healthcare.

This book has little merit with respect to the cost. The case studies are redundant in their illumination, as it were, of what project management is really about. It hasn't much to offer those in the profession and not much else for those exploring and learning the discipline.

It one of the better books in electronic format, the illustrations have not suffered and the book is just as I remembered it. I have other architectural guides that go into more detail but are not nearly as portable. I use this when I travel.

Perfect for those that are hurting, and anxious!

My Reflections:

This book is a powerful tool that will help to transform your life and grow your faith journey. In pure Anderson style you will be guided on a path to spiritual and personal growth. Anderson remains one of my favorite authors simply because he helped me change my life, directing me towards healing and ultimately the one who heals all brokenness my God. I was helped greatly through the book the Bondage Breaker, and have directed hurting people to this book (and the Bible) since.

It is no surprise that when I saw this book come through my email lists to review that I jumped at the opportunity.

This book is comprised of six sessions, the titles being: Being Transformed, Living Under Grace, Overcoming Anger, Overcoming Anxiety, Overcoming Depression, and Overcoming Losses. I equally found each chapter to hold valuable truths that can help hurting people heal and overcome struggles of depression, loss and discontentment.

In all the chapters Anderson references the bible and includes key points and verses. He also includes daily readings (passages of the bible) where we can turn to glean a greater understanding of our struggles and how God intended us to deal with them.
At the end of the chapters there is a study guide which would be great for a small group setting or to explore your relationship with God and your life situations on your own.

This book, in my opinion like the Bondage Breaker, is a fabulous tool to help the broken and wounded people in our lives to experience the freedom only God can bring. It is such a blessing to be reading this book "healed" God is Good, all the time, in the pain and brokenness we can be made new and beautiful.

Great tool for renewing your mind

This book is the fourth in a series of studies with the goal of helping Christians become more like Christ. Each book is aimed at addressing a hurdle Christians encounter in their spiritual walk. This study concentrates on tearing down mental strongholds, allowing Christ to rule in our hearts, being led by the Spirit, living under grace, and overcoming anger, depression and loss.

The book is divided into six sessions. Each session contains five chapters for daily study. Each daily study has a key point, a key verse, a little over a page of teaching, questions to answer, and a relevant quote from a church father. There are tips at the back of the book for group leaders.

The teaching sections in the book are well thought out, clear, and very practical. For each session, Anderson takes us through all that is necessary to renew our minds. He helps us to not just think about Scripture but to think scripturally, to see life from God's perspective.

One aspect of the study I especially appreciated and found very helpful was the teaching on the distinction between godly goals and godly desires. We may think we have a godly goal, but when its fulfillment depends on other people, it is really a godly desire, not a goal. I'm a goal maker and now I understand some of the frustration I have been feeling.

Anderson believes that many problems Christians have, such as some forms of mental depression, stem from false perceptions of yourself, your circumstances, and your future. These false perceptions can only be overcome as you are transformed by the renewing of your mind and by choosing to believe the truth. (152) This book will definitely help you identify the areas of false perceptions and give you the tools to move to biblical thinking. While this book can be used on a personal basis, I would suggest going through the book with a trusted friend or small group. The support of another would be very valuable in this process.

Working through this book, I think, will just be the beginning of the process of renewing your mind. As Anderson outlines near the end of the book, you have to be committed to this transforming process. If you are willing to work at renewing your mind, this study is a great resource. If you are a new Christian, you may want to go through studies one through three first.

Wonderful Bible Study Book for Small Groups

Renewing Your Mind is a Bible study book, not a read-through book. It is designed for individual or small group study. It is organized into six week’s worth of bite-sized lessons. The lay-out reminded me of the scripture in Isaiah 28 that talks about learning precept upon precept, line upon line. This study does that. It was orderly and progressive.

This book is also one small part of a large quantity of Bible study books meant to be studied together and probably in order, too.

For each day there is a suggested passage of scripture to read (not included in the text), a commentary that usually included some sort of word picture, metaphor or analogy that was easy to understand, and questions to stir your thinking intended to help with application.

The question section has room (in the print edition) to write your answers in the book. And this section seemed most suited for small groups, as I found some of the questions to be frustrating or pointless, at least without someone to discuss them with.

The first two chapters (weeks) were foundational in nature and then succeeding chapters (weeks) were focused on specific topics that are common trouble points for many Christians, that is, anger, anxiety, depression, and handling loss.

This book contains lots of nuggets of wisdom and it seemed geared towards for Christians that were believers young in their faith or perhaps those who have not ever learned some basics of the Christian life for whatever reason.

If you are newer to the Christian faith or you teach a Sunday school class or cell group with newer believers check this book out. It may be just what you were looking for!

About the Author

James Fadiman received his Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University and has taught at San Francisco State University, Brandeis, Stanford and Sofia University. He has his own consulting firm and offers seminars to executives and educators worldwide. He has written or edited books on holistic health, goal setting, and abnormal psychology, is an editor for two journals, and sits on the board of several non-profit corporations. James was a college counselor for several years and continues to teach Ph.D. students

Robert Frager received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University, where he was a teaching assistant to Erik Erikson and research assistant to Stanley Milgram. He has taught psychology at Harvard, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz and is the founder and first president of Sofia University, formerly the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology. He is currently Professor of Psychology and director of the Master’s program in Spiritual Guidance at Sofia University in Palo Alto, California.

Outstanding academic textbook

An excellent textbook on transpersonal approaches to personality development.

As an instructor, I have used this textbook with ease to plan a course on personality development. It covers both traditional and transpersonal approaches quite well, and offers an extensive range of theories to drawn upon. I undertook a review of several textbooks on this topic, and in terms of examining personality development from a holistic/transpersonal perspective, this book is unmatched.

Only the good die young; only the best books go out of print

This was the first serious chapter book I read to my six-year-old and it has completely sold her on books. Think of a book from your childhood that made you cry: Black Beauty? To Kill a Mockingbird? Why the Whales Came will be on your child's list one day. Thank you Michael Murpurgo, where ever you are.

Michael Morpurgo's 'Why the Whales Came'

I really enjoyed the first part of the book, as it was really interesting. I think that the author Michael Morpurgo was really clever using something that he knows about. He also wrote `The Wreck of the Zanzibar' and both stories are very alike in some ways. They are set in the same sort of time, and are both set around the Scilly Isles. I like this story so far because it is very realistic. I think that this could actually happen although it is a bit of a fantasy. I enjoyed the first part of the book as it is a different literature than I usually read, that is interesting.
At the start of the book Daniel and Gracie were sailing boats near the Isles of Scilly. When they couldn't find anywhere to sail their boats they went to the Birdman's territory. They lost one of their boats and the Birdman found it. The Birdman wrote messages in the sand to Daniel and Gracie and they gradually began to find out about him. The Birdman had had many bad stories told about him and everyone was terrified of him. Daniel and Gracie found the better side of him. This shows how many people judge other people by what they hear about them.
I think that the Birdman was actually very kind inside.
Daniel is very ambitious and likes to do things in a rush. Gracie is a bit shy and tries to stop Daniel in his frantic rush.

Gracie and Daniel know they are not to go near the Birdman. But is the Birdman really the dangerous figure others say?

A little story about perceptions and war and curses and prejudice that will get even young children thinking about important ideas.

Excellent series

A terrific series. My son started reading them and asked me to do so as well. I was skeptical but by about 20 pages into the first volume I was hooked. I have now devoured all 9 of them, and may well go back and read them all again in a year or two.

The main characters begin as children but grow up quickly throughout the series. Unlike too many "young adult" books, the adults are more interesting than the children, and the children realize that becoming an adult is something to strive for rather than resist.

All of the books are very funny as well as exciting. The "good guys" all have a wry sense of humor (obviously the author's as well), while the "bad guys" are typically overbearing and too serious. Children also fail to grasp the humor; growing up is shown as (in part) a process of coming to understand (and use) a rather dry wit with one's friends.

These are "sword and sorcery" type books, except that there doesn't seem to be any sorcery! Several people claim to have magical type powers, but the powers seem to all be fake, and the people who claim them are all bad guys. Several strange religious prophets also turn out to be hucksters.

The battle scenes are realistically told (though the skills of the protagonists are not always realistic). Death is not whitewashed; bones break and blood spurts and it HURTS. There is a realism to the entire series that is a wonderful change from typical "fantasy" fare.

There is no sex and only minimal time is given to love. The major virtues and concerns of the characters are honor, patience, friendship, a skeptical intelligence, and hard work. The characters struggle to master themselves and become better people.

In short: realistic, serious, and honest books about growing up -- all in a fun "epic fantasy" package. Highly recommended.

The ranger's apprentice

Imagine if the Rangers from "Lord of the Rings" took apprentices -- what kind of life would that be?

John Flanagan does a decent job answering the question in the first book of the Ranger's Apprentice series, "The Ruins of Gorlan." Besides setting up the medieval Anglo backdrop, Flanagan also spins up a solid fantasy story with plenty of monsters, weapons, a likable pair of teenage heroes, and a growing menace from a rarely-seen villain making a comeback.

On Choosing Day, Will hopes to be selected for Battleschool -- but he's rejected by all the people taking apprentices. The one exception is Halt, a Ranger.

And after Will inadvertently passes a test (climbing up a sheer wall into the Baron's study), Halt accepts him as an apprentice. At first, Will's new life seems to be all chores and unglamorous lessons, but he starts to realize the importance of the Ranger's skills. And at the same time, his fellow orphan Horace is being tormented at Battleschool by a gang of bullies.

Unfortunately, the kingdom is in new trouble -- the evil baron Morgarath is starting to send his monstrous Wurgals out once more, and there are even rumors that the ghastly Kalkara are also abroad. When it seems that the king himself may be Morgarath's target, Will and Halt are sent on a mission to stop the Kalkara -- except that the target isn't who they expect.

The world John Flanagan conjures up here is pretty recognizably a medieval England-that-never-was, with hints of similarly semi-familiar lands to explore (Gallica, Temujai). And he makes it more his own with elaborate fictional history, slightly too-Tolkienian flourishes (a villain named Morgarath?) and the first blossoming of a solid action/fantasy series.

The first half of "The Ruins of Gorlan" is a fairly slow experience, mostly made up of Will and Horace finding out what their new lives are all about. Lots of knife study, ponies, stew and tracking exercises, as well as a fairly nasty boar-hunt. And Flanagan liberally strews the story with plenty of historical backstory, and interesting details about medieval stuff (boar-spears, throwing knives, etc).

But about halfway through, the story suddenly becomes much darker, faster and bloodier. While the mild humour is still there ("Halt, Halt!"), Flanagan's tale becomes a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a pair of assassin Sasquatches. And he definitely knows how to weave a sense of tension and foreboding around the clash between Kalkara and Rangers.

Will is also an excellent hero in the Lloyd Alexander mold -- he dreams of being a great knight, but doesn't seem to have much chance of it. And as he works with Halt, he gradually comes to realize that there are ways of serving that are just as important, though not as glorious. And Halt is a good foil for Will -- quirky, taciturn and incredibly tough and deadly.

"The Ruins of Gorlan" is an excellent start to a solid fantasy series, and serves as a pretty entertaining fantasy/adventure in its own right. An excellent story for all ages.

Action packed book ! in a fabulous series

Castles, knights, awesome midieval weaponry, and super stealthy rangers--what 5th-7th grader could ask for more? Follow Halt, a senior king's ranger as he recruits and trains young Will in the ways of an elite team of specially trained defenders of the kingdom. Strong characters, both good and evil, are developed in Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series. Readers who struggle with lengthy books will need help with this one, but any adult who reads along with their child will also be sucked into the world of the King's Rangers!
